Seatbelts
The primary purpose of seatbelts is to keep passengers securely in their seats, significantly reducing the risk of bodily injury during a collision by preventing them from hitting parts of the interior or external structures.
When purchasing a new vehicle, ensure that seatbelts are available for all seats and rows, with adjustable features for height to accommodate different passenger sizes and enhance comfort. Additionally, verify that the emergency locking mechanism functions correctly to provide optimal restraint during sudden stops or accidents.
Airbags
Airbags offer additional protection for front-seat passengers by inflating instantly upon external collisions with another vehicle or object. This safety feature helps to prevent direct impacts with the steering wheel, dashboard, windshield, or other surfaces that could cause injury during an accident.
Despite their significant role in reducing injury from accidents, it’s vital never to rely solely on airbags and forgo using seatbelts. After a collision, airbags do not prevent the body from moving or being displaced, and they can even pose risks for children under the age of 12.
Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS)
The Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) prevents the wheels from completely locking during hard or sudden braking. It maintains wheel rotation intermittently, which increases the braking distance between the tire and the surface, reducing skidding, and allowing drivers some steering control on hard or slippery surfaces.
However, ABS does not eliminate the risk of accidents entirely. In certain situations, a driver may still lose control of the vehicle even with this system in place, especially when driving at excessive speeds or entering turns without reducing speed. Nevertheless, it remains one of the most crucial safety features available in any vehicle.
