Hyundai Discontinues the Genesis Coupe: A Look Back
Overview of the Hyundai Genesis Coupe
The Hyundai Genesis Coupe has had a long journey, and due to year after year of dwindling sales figures, the Korean brand has decided to discontinue this striking coupe. The Genesis Coupe, which began production in 2009, was Hyundai’s first rear-wheel-drive coupe and was based on the Genesis platform.
Key Features and Specifications
Not intended as a successor to the front-wheel-drive Hyundai Tiburon, the Genesis Coupe marked a milestone in the brand’s history and was targeted at competitors like the Infiniti G37 Coupe. It debuted at the New York International Auto Show in 2008 with a bold display of power slides and burnouts, quickly becoming the most powerful coupe in Hyundai’s lineup.
- Engine: 3.8-liter V6
- Horsepower: 300 hp
- Torque: 361 Nm
- Transmission: 7-speed automatic
While these figures meant it was not as powerful as the sedan it was based on, the Coupe didn’t lack in performance.
Market Reception and Future Prospects
Despite highly modified versions of the Genesis Coupe being showcased at global events like SEMA, the Korean coupe was unable to significantly impact the sports car market as Hyundai had initially hoped. Although Hyundai's new luxury division, Genesis, is expected to introduce a coupe in the future, it is unlikely that this will happen before 2020.
As the Hyundai Genesis Coupe approaches its hiatus, it would be wise to consider purchasing one as a unique piece of automotive history.
