Hyundai Unveils the IONIQ 5: A Groundbreaking Electric CUV
Introduction to the IONIQ 5
Hyundai Motor has officially launched the all-new IONIQ 5, a midsize CUV (Crossover Utility Vehicle), through a virtual global premiere. The IONIQ 5 stands as Hyundai's first battery electric vehicle (BEV) in the crossover segment, paving the way for the future of sustainable mobility with its advanced features and cutting-edge technology.
Innovative Platform and Eco-Friendly Design
Built on Hyundai Motor Group’s dedicated BEV architecture, the Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), the IONIQ 5 boasts unique proportions with an extended wheelbase. This advanced platform enables a spacious interior crafted from eco-friendly materials in many touchpoints throughout the cabin. The IONIQ 5 combines impressive performance with ultra-fast charging, Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capabilities, advanced connectivity, and driver-assistance technologies, all designed to deliver a safe, comfortable, and seamless driving experience.
Hyundai’s Vision for Unrestricted Mobility
On the occasion of the new model’s unveiling, Thomas Schemera, Executive Vice President and Global Chief Marketing Officer of Hyundai, stated: “The IONIQ 5 is designed to accommodate different lifestyles without limitations, proactively addressing customer needs throughout their journey. It is the first electric car to deliver a truly unique mobility experience by creatively utilizing interior space and integrating advanced technologies for the comfort and safety of all passengers.”
Flexible Powertrains to Suit Every Driver
The IONIQ 5 is offered with a variety of electric powertrain (PE) options to meet diverse mobility requirements, while consistently delivering strong, advanced performance across all variants.
Battery and Motor Options
- Two battery choices: 58 kWh or 72.6 kWh.
- Available with either a single rear motor or dual front and rear electric motors.
- All powertrain configurations provide an exceptional driving range and a top speed of 185 km/h.
Performance and Range
Beyond its diverse electric motor lineup, the IONIQ 5 offers an all-wheel-drive (AWD) option paired with the 72.6 kWh battery, delivering a total output of 225 kW and 605 Nm of torque. This setup enables the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.2 seconds. For the rear-wheel-drive (2WD) variant with the 72.6 kWh battery, the maximum driving range on a single charge is approximately 470–480 km, according to the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP).
Ultra-Fast Charging with E-GMP Technology
The new IONIQ 5’s E-GMP platform supports both 400V and 800V charging infrastructures. The 800V charging capability comes standard, alongside 400V charging, without the need for additional adapters or components. Hyundai’s patented multi-charging system uses the motor and inverter to seamlessly boost 400V to 800V, ensuring stable and compatible ultra-fast charging.
Rapid Charging Times
- With a 350 kW charger, the IONIQ 5 can charge from 10% to 80% in just 18 minutes.
- Only 5 minutes of charging is needed to gain up to 100 km of driving range, based on WLTP standards.
Innovative V2L Functionality
The IONIQ 5 introduces Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality, allowing customers to effortlessly power and charge external electric devices such as e-bikes, electric scooters, or camping equipment—turning the car into a mobile charging station on wheels.
V2L Power Output and Ports
- The V2L system provides up to 3.6 kW of power.
- An internal V2L port is located under the second-row seats, activated when the vehicle is turned on.
- An additional external port is available on the car’s exterior, supplying power even when the vehicle is turned off (with a converter).
- Both ports allow users to charge high-powered electrical equipment with ease.
Availability
The Hyundai IONIQ 5 will be available in select global markets starting from the first half of this year.
