In February 2017, the people of Oman protested the ever-increasing petrol prices by organizing a rally outside the popular Ministry of Oil and Gas in Muscat. While the public uproar saw the implementation of a cap on regular petrol prices (with the prices of Super and Diesel fluctuating as per international demand) economic situations have forced the government of Oman to revoke its previous cap of 186 baisa/liter.

Thirteen baisa more than its previously capped price, the price of M91 petrol has increased to 199 baisa/liter across the country and will continue to fluctuate monthly in relation to global oil prices. To offset this increase, the Government of Oman has introduced a subsidy program for low-income Omanis that earn less than OMR 600 per month, allowing them to purchase the first 200 liters of M91 petrol at a reduced rate of 180 baisa/liter.
The prices of M95 petrol and Diesel stand at 219 baisa/liter and 230 baisa/liter respectively, an increase of six baisa per liter on petrol and eleven baisa per liter on Diesel.
