Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class EV Prototype teases compact electric SUV
Tags:
Mercedes-Benz plans to grow its lineup of electric vehicles with the launch of an electric-only GLC-Class SUV. Recently, a group of selected automotive writers were able to sample a prototype of the upcoming model in Northern Sweden, providing an overview of its performance, styling, and technology.
Design and Platform
The electric GLC-Class retains the ubiquitous looks of its internal combustion engine (ICE) sibling, retaining the design signatures. Yet under its familiar skin is dedicated MB.EA underpinnings, specifically designed for electric vehicles (EVs).
This enables Mercedes to more optimally design the car's structure for electric driving without the compromises inherent in retrofitting available ICE platforms.
Performance and Powertrain
On the prototype test drives, the all-wheel-drive dual-motor setup produced around 483 horsepower. The configuration offered plenty of power, which allowed for dynamic handling even on difficult snow and icy roads.
The addition of a two-speed transmission, similar to that in the Porsche Taycan, provides smooth acceleration and efficiency in different driving conditions.
Battery and Charging Capabilities
The prototype houses a substantial 94.5-kWh battery pack, supporting 800-volt architecture. This configuration allows for impressive charging capabilities, with Mercedes-Benz indicating that charging rates of up to 320 kW can be sustained on compatible 350-kW chargers.
Range Expectations
Though official range estimates remain to be announced, early indications are that the electric GLC-Class will cover more than 400 miles on the European WLTP test cycle, equating to an EPA-estimated range of more than 300 miles.
Interior and Cargo Space
The electric version of the GLC-Class provides functional upgrades, such as a front trunk (frunk) with about four cubic feet of extra storage. We couldn’t get more info about the interior due to the camouflage.
Driving Experience
Test drives in Northern Sweden's harsh winter weather conditions highlighted the GLC EV's competent handling and stability. Fitted with Pirelli Scorpion Winter 2 snow tires, the vehicle showed excellent traction and control on icy roads. The stability and traction control systems were able to cope with the slippery road surfaces, providing a reassuring driving experience.
The electric GLC will likely make its first appearance at the IAA car show in Munich this September.
