MG RX5 Review: Design, Performance, and Features
Tags:
Introduction
The MG GT was our first experience with the British brand MG. We were truly impressed by its stunning exterior, modern interior design, and dynamic driving nature, all at a very reasonable price of 89,900 AED.
Exterior Design
This initial experience set high expectations for the MG RX5. This crossover features the brand's new sporty design language, aimed specifically at a younger audience with its contemporary look.
Front Design
The front grille showcases a glossy black finish with chrome accents, giving it a luxurious appearance, complemented by a beautiful bronze-highlighted front fascia.
Headlights
The headlights are striking and attractive, featuring a chrome line emanating from the grille that separates the lights in two. Additionally, the side mirrors come in two different colors and are adorned with turn signal lights.
Rear Design
Similar to the front, the rear lights are also divided by a chrome line, maintaining a cohesive design language throughout the vehicle—an uncommon feature in many cars.
Interior Cabin
The model we tested is the top variant of the RX5, equipped with alloy wheels shod in Michelin Pilot Sport tires. The cabin seats are upholstered in premium leather, showcasing that MG has invested time in providing an attractive interior appearance.
Interior Features
- 14.1-inch infotainment screen.
- Seats adjustable in 6 different positions.
- Electric sunroof.
- Self-dimming rearview mirror.
- Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.
- GPS and Bluetooth system.
- Wireless phone charger.
Rear Seat Comfort
One of the highlights of the interior is the exceptionally spacious rear seats compared to other models in the RX5 lineup. Many crossovers we’ve tested often sacrifice this feature, but the RX5 excels in this aspect.
Performance
The RX5 is equipped with a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine that produces 171 horsepower and 275 Nm of torque. These figures make it a highly capable vehicle. However, sound insulation could be improved, as you may notice noise at speeds of 120 km/h on the highway. Nonetheless, the Michelin tires significantly help reduce external noise.
Transmission
The vehicle features a 6-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT), which is not our favorite choice. Most cars produced in China, like this one, come with a DCT. We would have preferred a torque converter for a better response. Although the DCT shifts gears quickly, it lacks smoothness at slow speeds and exhibits turbo lag during brief acceleration periods, yet it still performs adequately.
Safety Features
In terms of safety, the RX5 is loaded with features such as:
- Hill descent control.
- Traction control system.
- Anti-rollover system.
- Emergency braking assistance.
- 65% steel structure to mitigate accident risks.
MG also claims to have conducted 500,000 laboratory tests and opened and closed the doors 120,000 times to assess durability.
Conclusion
After testing the MG RX5, we concluded that this vehicle encompasses all the features one might need, showcasing an attractive exterior with an abundance of interior specifications and numerous safety features, all for the price of 89,900 AED.
