Renault Zoe: Innovations and Electric Vehicle Strategy
If you are a follower of my recent articles, you would know that electric vehicles are a subject of great interest to me. While there are regions in the world that are ahead of the Middle East in terms of electric vehicle adoption and challenges, this area aims to double its efforts to catch up. In this article, we will explore the significant changes in the new Renault Zoe and Renault's global strategy for electric vehicles, as well as what the industry needs to accelerate the adoption of electric cars. Although there is no specific launch date yet, the new Renault Zoe is expected to debut in the Middle East in early next year, with a starting price similar to the current model. Let me share my initial impressions of the new Zoe: as a buyer, you will get more for the same amount of money—more range, more features, and better manufacturing quality. However, as we noted in our initial report on electric vehicles, such vehicles still tend to be expensive compared to their fuel-powered counterparts.

Renault's Commitment to Developing Electric Vehicles
Before diving into the specifics of the new Renault Zoe, let me provide some background on Renault's commitment to electric vehicle development. Their strategy began 12 years ago, in 2007, when electric vehicles were not even part of the automotive discussion—at least here in the Middle East. Renault aimed to contribute to environmental improvement while increasing vehicle sales. Since then, Renault has invested over $4 billion and engaged more than 30,000 individuals in implementing this strategy. According to the figures, since 2007, they have sold over 250,000 electric vehicles, making them the leading brand in Europe. By 2022, Renault announced that 50% of their lineup would consist of electric or hybrid models, with new models being introduced along with redesigns of existing ones, projected to generate 10% of the group's sales.

Details of the New Renault Zoe for 2020
Now, let’s discuss the details of the new Renault Zoe for 2020. This generation marks the third iteration since the Zoe's launch, with the electric vehicle first introduced in 2012 (the first generation was not available in the Middle East). The Zoe has evolved significantly over the past seven years. We had the second generation of the Zoe, which YallaMotor’s Zaran tested (you can read about it here) during the "Global Electric Road Trip." With over 160,000 customers in 50 countries and 60 awards, the Zoe 4.0 paves the way for the new Zoe in 2020. While it may not appear entirely new at first glance, it is, in fact, a completely new vehicle.
During the press conference, Renault highlighted three key messages: the new Zoe features improved design, greater driving range, and enhanced technology. At that moment, I thought, "Sure, this is the usual pitch from any press conference; let’s see how accurate these claims are." However, despite my initial skepticism, all the facts about the new Zoe turned out to be true. They even overlooked a fourth equally important fact—I’m talking about quality. Inside the cabin of the Renault Zoe, you will find elements that elevate the expected quality at an affordable price to new heights. New Zoe Details
I will cover the design, driving range, available technology, and improvements in manufacturing quality.
Design
The new Zoe did not undergo major changes in overall design; instead, it features subtle modifications that you as a buyer might not recognize at first glance. Nevertheless, these enhancements make the car appear more refined and mature. If you know a bit about design principles, you’ll understand that starting from a solid design foundation requires minimal changes; simply integrating some suitable new design elements in the right places can yield a more interesting product. What I particularly appreciate about the Renault Zoe is that it looks like any other regular car, without any strange designs to distinguish it as an electric vehicle. While other manufacturers attempted to create futuristic and odd designs for their early electric cars, Renault focused on building a familiar and appealing small hatchback.

The most noticeable changes in the new Zoe are found in the front grille, featuring new LED headlights that follow Renault's new brand design language with C-shaped daytime running lights, a new bumper with fog lights, and chrome details below. Additionally, the hood adds a new, more robust shape, giving the Zoe a more interesting appearance on the road. The overall dimensions of the car have not changed, and at the rear, we also see new LED lights with dynamic indicators.
Driving Range
The previous generation of the Zoe had a driving range of only 150 kilometers, which is considered outdated for electric vehicles today. This new model for 2020 comes equipped with a 52 kWh battery producing 135 horsepower with a torque of 245 Nm. This combination provides the electric vehicle with an official driving range of 395 km under ideal driving conditions. To be more precise and realistic, the new Zoe is likely to achieve around 340 kilometers of range in real-world conditions.

Since we are discussing the battery, it’s worth highlighting charging times. The new Zoe allows charging from both direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) stations, which were available with the previous generation. To clarify, AC charging is slower than DC charging because AC goes through a converter before feeding the battery, while DC charging goes directly to the battery, known as fast charging.
If you charge the Zoe at home with a 7 kW charger, it will take a full night (8 hours) to charge the battery completely. However, if you charge the Zoe at a public station with an 11 kW charger, you can gain up to 120 kilometers of range in just two hours. With a 22 kW charging station, you can achieve the same range in half the time. Finally, at a fast charging station that provides 50 kW, you will receive nearly half of a full battery charge—approximately 150 km of range—in just half an hour.

Technology
The 2020 Renault Zoe comes with a new driving mode called "B." When activated, the car slows down more quickly when the accelerator pedal is released, making the brake pedal almost unnecessary. The vehicle will regenerate more energy and return it to the battery, enhancing its range and overall driving distance. This technology was also seen in the Chevrolet Bolt that Zaran tested earlier, which you can read about here.
Available Technology
This new version is equipped with cutting-edge technology that you can use while driving. For instance, the new Zoe features automatic parking brakes, wireless phone charging, an LED ceiling light, two rear USB ports, traffic sign recognition, blind spot warning, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, and front, rear, and side parking sensors with a fully autonomous parking system.

Manufacturing Quality
Last but not least, I feel that the new Renault Zoe has elevated quality to the next level. I genuinely felt that the quality of the materials used inside came from a different and more expensive automotive sector. This is all thanks to the recycled materials (for greater environmental sustainability) that Renault has incorporated in its construction, replacing most of the hard plastics used in the previous Zoe. For example, this is something we recently saw in the Volvo XC40 that Zaran drove two weeks ago, and you can see it here. These materials come from recycled fabric scraps, old seat belts, and plastic bottle fibers. The combination of soft plastics and these materials gives you the feeling of driving a luxury vehicle.
In this regard, I asked Renault if using these materials was more costly to produce compared to the plastics we were accustomed to. The answer was "no," making this an exciting opportunity for all automakers to begin using these materials instead of hard plastics, as such materials are more environmentally friendly, enhance the quality feel, and do not increase costs.

In conclusion, I share my views on the new Renault Zoe, which is set to arrive in the Middle East by early 2020. This small electric vehicle is a testament to the continuous improvement of electric cars in terms of products, services, quality, features, and design. This third generation reinforces my confidence that the electric vehicle sector is on the right track, and if you test drive the new Zoe yourself, you will certainly feel the same way. - Public Awareness: Car buyers are unaware of the true potential of electric vehicles. The report revealed that perceptions change when people drive or own an electric vehicle themselves. All stakeholders need to unite to put car buyers behind the wheel and let them experience electric vehicles for themselves to change their perceptions.
- Choice: This is linked to consumer confidence. Car buyers will "trust" electric vehicles when they see them on the road. For this to happen, manufacturers need to start bringing more electric cars to the region.
- Price: Currently, electric vehicles are very expensive; for instance, the Renault Zoe is expected to be priced around 140,000 AED. In all other markets, the government sector offers subsidies of up to $10,000 (36,700 AED) to encourage car buyers to switch and purchase electric vehicles.
- Creating Charging Stations in Residential Buildings: While the UAE has one of the best ratios of charging stations per electric vehicle, we still need to address how we will charge them at home.
To some extent, the adoption of electric vehicles in our region has begun to take shape, especially in the UAE, which is leading this movement steadily. However, it is not an easy task; it faces numerous obstacles and challenges that need to be addressed more swiftly. These are challenges that both manufacturers and governments must work together to overcome and resolve.
