Volkswagen Passat Review: A Spacious and Comfortable D-Segment Sedan

In the last couple of years, Volkswagen (VW) has decided to compete in the D-segment, aiming to capture market share from popular models like the Altima, Accord, Camry, Malibu, and emerging competitors such as Hyundai and Kia.
Enter the Passat.
I must admit that I am a self-confessed petrol head. When it comes to cars, I typically make decisions with my heart. So, the thought of testing a car labeled with the badge ‘Sport’ is always appealing. However, I must warn readers seeking a spirited drive to look elsewhere, as the Passat delivers a decidedly average driving experience, prioritizing a "non-Sport" regular drive.
Interior
I’m a bit ashamed to admit that my day job is as an auditor, requiring me to make decisions based on hard facts and cold numbers. From an auditor's perspective, the VW Passat stands out as one of the most appealing cars in its segment.
While the Passat may not be the prettiest car, it possesses a handsome design that holds its own on the streets. Its uncluttered lines distinguish it from overly stylized competitors, such as the Altima, which tries too hard, or the Malibu, which borrows too many design features from its sporty counterparts.
What truly impresses is the interior quality. With new models entering the segment, the quality and equipment levels have significantly risen. Thanks to its affiliation with Audi under the Volkswagen Group, the Passat benefits from high-quality materials.
The interior is spacious, featuring:
- Electrically adjustable front seats
- Heated seats for comfort in hot climates
- A roomy back seat accommodating taller passengers
In terms of space, the Passat excels, offering ample legroom for passengers, making it a great choice for families.
Drive
The challenge arises when starting the engine. The 2.5-liter, 5-cylinder engine produces a modest 168bhp. In comparison to competitors with similar-sized engines generating more horsepower, VW’s decision is puzzling. The Passat feels sluggish off the line, with a disappointing 0-100 km/h time of over 9 seconds, and the engine lacks eagerness to rev.
However, once in motion, the power becomes adequate. The Passat cruises smoothly and quietly at highway speeds, making long drives comfortable. Its soft suspension provides a smooth ride, although perhaps too soft for some drivers. Fuel efficiency is commendable at just 6L/100km, with an average of 9L/100km during mixed driving.
The Passat is well-equipped with features such as:
- Electric heated seats
- Dual-zone climate control
- Navigation system
- High-end Fender sound system
- Cruise control
However, a noticeable omission is the absence of LED or xenon headlights. The Passat is limited to a single engine option in the UAE, which feels outdated compared to its siblings that feature more powerful engines, like the 2-liter turbo in the Golf GTi or Scirocco.
At a price of AED 120,000, the Passat competes with high-end versions of its rivals. Yet, it offers advantages, such as a 3-year/45,000 km service contract and a 5-year unlimited mileage warranty.
Verdict
If you seek a peppy car for spirited drives, the Passat may not be the right choice. However, if you prefer a quiet, spacious, and quality sedan to transport you from A to B comfortably, the Volkswagen Passat is an excellent option.
