2014 Infiniti QX70 S Review: Luxury Crossover with V8 Power

2014 Infiniti QX70 S

This weekend, I had the pleasure of driving a redesigned, rebranded, and reborn 5.0L V8 beast known as the Infiniti QX70 S. Essentially a rebranding of the previous FX, this rebirth has resulted in very noticeable improvements. For all intents and purposes, it can be considered an all-new entrant to the market. The QX70 comes in two variants: 3.7-liter V6 and the 'S' version which we tested. How does it fare among the current crop of luxury crossovers? Let's find out...

Style

2014 Infiniti QX70 S Exterior

Although beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I don’t believe many will disagree that this is a good-looking machine. It has managed to shake off the bulky SUV-esque styling that continues with key competitors like the 2014 BMW X5 50i and the Mercedes ML 500.

The exterior is curvy and coupe-like with a mean-looking front grille that adds a distinct persona. A stretched-out hood, low roof, sleek design, and creative headlamps contribute to shifting the car closer to the coupe spectrum of styling.

I love the 21-inch wheels; they add character. Features like LED taillights, HID bi-Xenon headlights, and chrome exhaust tips enhance the sporty look missed by the aforementioned German rivals.

Interior

Interior Finishing and Space

The interior is the trickiest portion of this vehicle. On first impression, it is plush with fine quilted leather and wood trims in the door panels and lower center console, combined with generous legroom in the front seats, making it cozy yet classy.

However, upon deeper inspection, the front dash feels less refined compared to the rest of the interior quality. The center console is overly cluttered, and there is relatively less legroom in the backseat compared to other crossovers. The unique styling of the Infiniti QX70 S reduces headroom as well. If you are tall, headroom may be a concern during your test drive.

The cabin is not the quietest in its class, with some road noise present, though not unbearably loud. These faults are minor; after spending my weekend driving, I can confidently say it is a good place to be in. It's very comfortable and visually appealing inside.

Interior Features and Technology

2014 Infiniti QX70 S Technology Features

In terms of technology, the QX70 S comes with all the conveniences expected in such a vehicle, including Bluetooth phone connection, Sat Nav, and multiple CD changers in our fully optioned model.

One key feature is the intelligent cruise control system. Once a speed is set, the car takes over braking and acceleration based on the speed of the vehicle in front, making long Sheikh Zayed Road commutes more relaxing.

Other noteworthy features include parking assist cameras providing a bird’s eye view for easier parking, and a 9.3GB music box hard drive to store your music directly in the car.

Safety Features

The intelligent cruise control system aids in preventing incidents on the highway, capable of bringing the car to a complete stop if necessary. The car is loaded with airbags, including dual-stage supplemental front airbags with seatbelt and occupant classification sensors. It also features driver and front-passenger side-impact supplemental airbags, along with rollover protection.

Standard features include 4-wheel ABS, brake assist, and reinforced passenger compartment construction, ensuring it ticks all major safety boxes.

Drive Performance

Power and Engine

The 5.0-liter V8 engine in the QX70 S is a standout feature, generating 390bhp at 6,500 RPM and peak torque of 500 Nm at 4,400 RPM. For comparison, a Mustang GT generates 420bhp and 390Nm of torque, showcasing how impressive the QX70 S is.

With 390 horsepower, the car accelerates from 0-100 km/h in just 6 seconds, making overtaking effortless. It provides a muscle car feeling with its raw power, blistering acceleration, and the throaty roar of the V8.

Despite weighing just over 2.1 tons, it feels lighter and nimbler than expected, especially in sport mode.

Suspension and Handling

The QX70 S handles curbs with ease, akin to a low-riding coupe. Navigating curvy, narrow inner roads is straightforward, and quick cornering is manageable. Factors like the low ride height and 21-inch rims contribute to the improved handling. The firm suspension and slightly heavy steering allow for a better road feel, while the clever traction control system is a blessing given the power generated.

Verdict

The relaunch gives the QX70 S a new chance to prove itself in the competitive crossover category. Priced at around 280,000 AED ($76,300 USD), it is more affordable than most German competitors. While space is a slight drawback, particularly in the rear legroom and boot, it is sufficient for average families. If you're looking for a vehicle that offers utility, comfort, a classy interior, and a sporty drive, I recommend giving the QX70 S a test drive.
