2014 Infiniti QX80 Review
The 2014 Infiniti QX80 is a big, tall, and imposing luxury SUV that offers comfort and road respect. But does it meet the expectations of its buyers? As luxury SUVs become increasingly popular in the Middle East, high-income families have several options to consider, including the Lexus LX, Lincoln Navigator, and Cadillac Escalade. We took the 7-seater giant for a test drive to find out more...
Style

The Infiniti QX80 stands out among its peers with a less boxy and more curvaceous design, which some buyers may appreciate. Its elevated height commands road respect, measuring 600 mm taller than the Lexus LX. This sheer height makes the 22-inch wheels appear somewhat petite. The elevated front bumper showcases a large grille, contributing to a poised yet grand presence. Key exterior features include:
- High Intensity Discharge (HID) bi-Xenon headlights with auto leveling
- LED taillights
- Stylish and sturdy running boards
- Chrome body side moldings for added flair
Interior

Inside the QX80, the seats resemble those found in the Nissan Patrol, featuring premium materials and stitching. The interior boasts generous wood trim on:
- Center console
- Steering wheel
- Rear center console
- Rear doors
The analogue clock adds a touch of sophistication to the center console. However, the sunroof extends only to passenger level, which is a disappointment. A more panoramic moonroof would be preferable, allowing the second-row passengers to enjoy the views. The rear seat entertainment system includes:
- 'Captain seats' for second-row children
- A rear center console that doubles as a cooler box
- Optional Bose Surround System with 13 or 15 speakers
Interior Space

Our test vehicle featured a fitted rear console-cum-cooler box, limiting the second-row seating to just two passengers, as the console's design made it difficult to lift for a third person. In the previous QX56 model, the console could easily be lifted, accommodating three passengers. Thus, the 7-seater effectively becomes a 6-seater, with the third row suitable only for children. Thanks to 60/40 split seating and the second-row's 'cannonball' style fold-up feature, there is ample cargo space in the QX80.
Safety and Comfort Features
The sound insulation in the QX80 is impressive, rendering it a very quiet vehicle, with minimal engine or road noise. However, the AC can be quite loud, compensating for external noise. On a hot afternoon, the air conditioning performed exceptionally well, keeping the cabin cooler compared to other SUVs. This is also aided by the added UV protection in the windows. Standard safety features, while not best in class, are adequate. Our test car included:
- Lane Departure audio and visual warnings
- Forward collision alerts (audio and visual)
- Adaptive cruise control
Drive Performance

Engine and Power
The Infiniti QX80 is powered by a 5.6-liter V8 engine that generates 560 Nm of torque and 400 horsepower, making it well-suited for long cross-country road trips. The acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h is around 7.5 seconds, which is quite respectable.
Drive Experience
Parking the QX80 in urban settings can be challenging due to its size. Even with decent parking spaces, adjustments are often necessary to open doors and exit properly. While the QX80 looks great in villa garages, navigating busy locations like the Mall of the Emirates can be tricky. Smaller cars like the Nissan Tiida or Yaris may seem to disappear next to the tall QX80, making optional safety features like collision alert quite beneficial.
On highways, the QX80 truly shines. Equipped with adaptive cruise control, it allows for a relaxing journey without much need for manual control. Legroom is ample in both front and back, with four cup holders, eight bottle holders, and a cooler box for added convenience. There is also a 12V power outlet in the back, enhancing practicality despite the rear center console issue.
Transmission

The Infiniti QX80 features an all-mode 4WD system with a separate computer-controlled transfer case, making it suitable for off-road adventures (though installing off-road bumpers is advisable). It comes with a 7-speed automatic transmission and adaptive shift control for improved driving dynamics.
Handling and Steering
The steering of the QX80 feels very light for its size. Although Infiniti describes it as 'speed sensitive' power steering, a heavier steering feel would inspire more confidence during turns, especially given the vehicle's large dimensions.
Visibility
Prospective buyers of the Infiniti QX80 should ensure that their vehicle is equipped with front and rear parking sensors, as the elevated front bumper can hinder visibility. Our test vehicle included a top view and rear camera, making navigation easier, but these features can be essential for those unfamiliar with the vehicle's size.
Verdict
The 2014 Infiniti QX80 starts at 279,000 AED, but the price can exceed 300,000 AED (approximately $82,000 USD) with optional safety features. While I believe the height could be lower and the rear center console design compromises passenger space, I thoroughly enjoy the comfort, wood trims, and powerful highway performance. This SUV is a great choice for families who love road trips. However, if your needs are primarily for short drives to school, consider more compact options.
