Overview of the New Number Plate Factory
Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), inaugurated a new number plate factory in Deira, Dubai. This factory is the first of its kind in the world, utilizing robots in the manufacturing of vehicle plates and capable of producing up to 33,000 number plates per day—a significant increase from the current output of 3,000 plates per day.
Technology and Benefits of the Robotic Factory
Designed and produced by the German company Tönnjes Middle East GMBH, the robotic factory offers numerous benefits, the most significant of which is the capability to render number plates with a ‘zero margin error’. In contrast, the previous system ran the risk of printing the same number twice. The new system can generate a number plate in just 15 seconds, a substantial decrease from the 120 seconds required by the older system, and can print up to six different types of vehicle plates simultaneously.
Advanced Features of the Number Plate System
The robots employ a combination of artificial intelligence and an e-Licensing system, allowing them to operate autonomously without human intervention. In the coming years, the RTA plans to install 10 such machines at service provider locations, all of which will be controlled through the central factory. This system will track the lifecycle of the number plate from manufacturing to scrapping, utilizing a QR code attached to each number plate.
