Speed Limit Reduction in Dubai

Announcement from Dubai's Traffic Police Chief

Major General Mohammed Saif Al Zafin, the head of Dubai's Traffic Police, has called for a reduction in speed limits across Dubai by 10 km/h.

Reasons for the Decision

This decision comes after data from Dubai Police indicated that nearly two-thirds of traffic violations (1.2 million) in the first seven months of 2013 were due to speeding.

Future Plans

Al Zafin confirmed that any initiatives aimed at reducing speed are welcomed, referencing a similar initiative in Abu Dhabi where speed limits were reduced by 20 km/h on highways, resulting in fewer speeding violations.

Impact of Speed Reduction on Accidents

General Al Zafin stated that lowering the maximum speed limit leads to fewer accidents, noting that 90% of traffic accidents occur due to excessive speed.

Age Groups of Offenders

The majority of offenders are aged between 18 and 36 years.
