Audi Q6 e-tron Sportback Dakar: A Tribute to Off-Road Excellence

Audi Q6 e-tron Dakar

Audi's off-road motorsport legacy hit new heights earlier this year when it conquered the grueling Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia. Piloted by Carlos Sainz Sr. (yes, he’s the dad of current Ferrari F1 driver Carlos Sainz), the RS Q e-tron showcased the brand's relentless push into performance EVs.

Now, Audi seems to be translating this motorsport success into something roadworthy—or rather, trail-worthy. Recent spy shots reveal that Audi is working on a highly modified off-road version of the recently revealed Q6 e-tron Sportback. This new SUV, possibly an homage to the brand’s Dakar victory, is rumored to be a limited-edition, all-terrain beast aimed squarely at off-road enthusiasts and collectors alike.

A Tribute to the Dakar Triumph

The Audi Q6 e-tron Sportback Dakar is what we’re calling it for now with no official name revealed yet. Boasting a tall ride height and a wide stance, it also has an aggressive body kit, bulbous wheel arches, and redesigned bumpers, along with massive Toyo Open Country Mud-Terrain tires. Rugged.

The roof of the prototype is adorned with a storage rack, mimicking the design seen on the limited-edition Audi Q8 e-tron Edition Dakar, which launched earlier this year. It looks ready for some serious trail action, equipped with tow hooks embedded in a custom front fascia and enhanced approach and departure angles—a clear nod to its Dakar-inspired DNA.

The Platform and Power

The Q6 e-tron Sportback Dakar is slated to be based on Audi's Premium Platform Electric (PPE), the brand's dedicated EV architecture. Audi is expected to offer dual-motor all-wheel-drive setups across the range.

In base form, the Q6 e-tron is anticipated to deliver 456 horsepower, with the high-performance SQ6 e-tron packing up to 510 hp. An even wilder RS variant has been rumored, which could push the performance envelope even further.

Audi has yet to confirm whether this Dakar-inspired Q6 e-tron will be a limited-edition production model or a concept vehicle to commemorate its Dakar Rally legacy. However, considering the extensive modifications and near-production-ready design, speculation is growing that Audi may indeed take this rugged Q6 e-tron to production.

A Rally-Inspired Production SUV?

While Audi’s foray into off-roaders has previously been limited to special editions like the Q8 e-tron Edition Dakar, this Q6 Dakar tribute could mark a turning point. Audi’s ambitions in the electric SUV space are no secret, and expanding into the off-road luxury EV market could be a strategic move to compete with iconic models like the Land Rover Defender and Mercedes-Benz G-Class.

The brand’s rallying roots have long been intertwined with its innovation in performance. Audi's participation in the Dakar Rally has showcased its prowess in extreme environments, and with more automakers venturing into rally-inspired models, Audi's rugged, all-electric Q6 Sportback might just be the sign of what's to come.

Looking Ahead to 2025

Rumors suggest that Audi could officially unveil the Q6 e-tron Sportback Dakar during the lead-up to the 2025 Dakar Rally, which kicks off on January 3rd. If the speculation proves true, Audi’s new off-road EV could be more than just a tribute to its motorsport success—it could represent the next step in the evolution of luxury electric SUVs.
