Tesla Model X P100D Review: The Ultimate Electric SUV
The Tesla Model X P100D is the fastest, most capable, and most expensive Tesla currently available. For those who followed our coverage of the Global EVRT, a road trip covering 2,500km across the UAE and Oman in an electric vehicle, you may recall my brief encounter with the Model X. Today, we will explore if it’s worth its 483,000 Dirham price tag.
Exterior
While the Model X resembles the Model S with its expanded roof, it certainly distinguishes itself from the crowd. The design prioritizes function over form, providing improved headroom for second-row occupants and featuring smooth lines that make the Model X one of the most aerodynamic SUVs currently for sale.
As an electric vehicle, the Model X lacks traditional design elements like a large front grille or exhaust pipe. Instead, it offers substantial storage space, including a front trunk (or "frunk") with 187 liters of capacity, ample enough for a weekend golf bag. For larger items, the boot boasts an impressive 2,180 liters when the last row is folded flat.
The key to the Model X is unique, shaped like the car itself, with five discreet buttons. Tapping the buttons opens the stunning falcon doors, which not only look beautiful but are also equipped with sensors to prevent collisions with nearby objects.
Interior
The Tesla Model X is not only the most capable but also the most spacious Tesla on the market. It seats seven, with ample room for average-sized adults. The impressive windshield connects seamlessly to the sunroof, creating a spacious feel complemented by magnetic sun visors.
Tesla’s minimalist approach is evident in the large vertical screen on the dashboard. However, despite the white leather and carbon fiber trim, the overall cabin quality doesn’t quite meet expectations for a vehicle in this price range.
The second row benefits from the generous roof height, providing plenty of headroom, with side passengers enjoying their own mini sunroofs. The side seats adjust electronically, while the middle seat can be controlled from the front screen.
The last row is spacious enough for adults, with ample headroom and legroom, plus cupholders and two A/C vents for added comfort.
Features
The Tesla Model X is equipped with standard tech features like LED lights, built-in navigation, and outstanding mobile connectivity. However, let’s focus on the unique aspects that set the Model X apart.
- The car features an active data connection, similar to your smartphone, allowing web browsing, live traffic information, and online radio.
- Over-the-air updates keep your vehicle current, adding new features effortlessly.
- Equipped with eight cameras, twelve sensors, and a front-facing radar, the Model X can detect cars, buses, trucks, pedestrians, and even pets.
- Though it has the hardware for self-driving, legal restrictions in many countries currently limit its autonomous capabilities.
- Approaching a Tesla charger, the Model X automatically opens its charging port, showcasing its intelligent technology.
Drive
The driving experience of the Tesla Model X differs significantly from petrol-powered vehicles due to its lack of a traditional engine. The quiet operation adds to the luxurious feel, and the instant power delivery is unmatched, providing an exhilarating ride.
The dual motor setup in the P100D generates 762 horsepower and over 1,000 Nm of torque, enabling acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h faster than a Ferrari 488 or a Corvette Z06. Remember, this is a seven-seater SUV.
With a top speed of 250 km/h, the Model X can deliver over 500 kilometers on a single charge when driven sensibly. This is achieved through regenerative braking, which charges the battery while driving, and an adjustable ride height that lowers at highway speeds for improved aerodynamics.
Verdict
Comparing the Tesla Model X P100D to petrol-powered cars may be unfair. Its exceptional all-around capabilities hint at a future where consumers choose electric vehicles not just for environmental reasons but because they offer superior driving experiences. For those ready to embrace the Tesla lifestyle, it’s worth noting that the Model X comes with an eight-year unlimited kilometer warranty on the battery, and the brand recycles up to 97% of used batteries.
