After much anticipation, Elon Musk finally revealed his highly awaited autonomous Robotaxi, nicknamed the Cybercab, at the “We. Robot.” event in Los Angeles. The futuristic design takes inspiration from the iconic Cybertruck, combining crisp, angular surfaces with modern features like full-width light bars. It’s Elon’s vision of the future of transportation.
A Glimpse of Tesla’s Autonomous Dream
Elon Musk emphasized that the Tesla Cybercab is not just about comfort—it's a bold step toward his vision of a world where humans can reclaim time spent driving.
According to Musk, the average person spends around 12 days a year behind the wheel, and the Cybercab could potentially offer that time back for other pursuits. Moreover, the Cybercab promises enhanced safety, with Musk claiming it can "see in all directions" and never gets fatigued, unlike human drivers.
Tesla projects the Cybercab to enter full-scale production by 2026, with prices starting from around $30,000. However, Musk also pointed out that owning one privately may not be the ideal use case.
The Cybercab is designed to work autonomously, making money while its owner isn't using it—like a ride-hailing service that operates independently. This opens up opportunities for fleet ownership, where, as Musk puts it, someone could manage a “flock” of Cybercabs for business purposes.
Stripped-Down but High-Tech Interior
Inside, the Cybercab is surprisingly minimalistic. It features butterfly doors and two seats, but what really catches the eye is the 21-inch central screen. With no physical controls for driving, the screen becomes the focal point, allowing passengers to tap in their destination and relax. Cupholders are there for your convenience, and Musk envisions passengers utilizing the freed-up time for entertainment or productivity.
Performance and Range Uncertainty
As with most Tesla reveals, specific performance metrics for the Cybercab are still under wraps. No range or battery specs were disclosed, though it is expected to achieve a 5.5 miles per kWh efficiency and a range close to 200 miles.
With prototype testing already underway, the Cybercab appears to be in the advanced stages of development, although it remains to be seen whether Tesla can stick to its proposed production timeline.
Prototype Experience: A Taste of What’s to Come
To showcase the potential of the Cybercab, 20 prototype units were built and tested around the Warner Bros. Studio in LA. These prototypes were tasked with navigating various obstacles such as parked cars, intoxicated pedestrians, and tight corners—and they handled everything with ease.
The Robovan: Tesla’s Future for Mass Transport
Musk also teased another future product—the Robovan, an electric vehicle designed to move large groups of people autonomously. Although no detailed specs were provided, the Robovan can reportedly carry over 10 passengers. This could extend Tesla’s autonomous ambitions to public transportation and logistics, further disrupting how people and goods move in urban environments.
Oh, before we forget to tell you, though not car related, another crowd-pleaser was the return of Tesla’s humanoid robot, Optimus. Yeah, Elon is back with his robotic dreams… the robots were doing all sorts of stuff at the event from walking together in an army to serving beer like a bartender.
