UK Expedition to the Nefud Desert in Saudi Arabia 2024
Tags:
Introduction
In May 2024, an exploratory journey from the United Kingdom will traverse the Nefud Desert in northern Saudi Arabia, creating a new route through this remote and arid region. The Nefud 2024 team plans to be the first to demonstrate the viability of alternative energy as a feasible option for exploration vehicles, transporting the team, supplies, and equipment across these rugged paths and challenging terrains.
Team Leader Statements
Team leader Dr. Alan Crofts stated, "We are confident in our ability to practically utilize fully electric or hybrid vehicles for the expedition, and we have designed the route to integrate suitable charging points."
He further added, "We are bringing high-tech solar energy mats on the expedition, which will enable us to charge the vehicle batteries and power our equipment." The team is also exploring the possibility of using biofuels to operate a diesel support vehicle, which could also provide backup charging.
Why the Nefud Desert?
Alan remarked, "I crossed the Empty Quarter a few years ago, and I have a deep admiration for the desert regions in the Gulf area. I found evidence that part of the Nefud was referred to as Sun's Saddle, and at that time, the locals believed it impassable during the day. It is a region of sandstorms and dust devils, with beautiful sandy plains and dune systems—a place I am eager to explore."
Our respect for the desert and its inhabitants has driven us to adopt a strategy to minimize our carbon footprint by using alternative energy vehicles. "We are very interested in forming cultural connections with the local populations and associations in the Nefud area of northern Saudi Arabia," he added.
Team Composition and Partnerships
The team is comprised of six members, all experienced in exploratory work. One of the team members is a renowned filmmaker who will visually document the campaign's performance and the vehicle for public relations purposes.
The team is currently working with the British Embassy in Riyadh to secure approval from a member of the Saudi royal family. They are also establishing connections with the Advanced Energy Department at Princess Nourah University in Riyadh and the Saudi Media and Research Group (SMRG).
Alan informed us, "We are generating significant media interest from the UK, Europe, and the Gulf region, and we are forming alliances with key Saudi institutions and the British/Saudi Chamber of Commerce." As new sponsors join, we will issue press releases to outlets throughout the Middle East.
We are also very grateful to our friends at YallaMotor.com for their support of the expedition.
