Introduction

RTA Bus

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai has successfully designed and tested wireless charging technology for electric cars and buses using the magnetic field resonance-based technology (SMFIR). Similar to the technology seen in science fiction movies, SMFIR allows vehicles to charge while stationary or in motion, addressing issues related to battery capacity, lengthy charging times, and the need for charging infrastructure.

Project Details

Mattar Mohammed Al Tayer, the CEO and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, stated: The initial phase involves preparing the infrastructure and installing a power charging network beneath a 60-meter stretch of road in Dubai Silicon Oasis for dynamic wireless charging of electric vehicles and buses.

SMFIR Technology

Al Tayer elaborated on the SMFIR technology, saying: This technology enables seamless operation of vehicles without stopping at charging stations. This invisible technology is integrated into the road, thus having no visual pollution impact on the city, and it does not obstruct pedestrian or vehicle movement like traditional roadside chargers.

Electric Charging Stations in Dubai

The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has developed over 240 charging stations for electric vehicles across Dubai in line with the SMFIR technology revolution, with plans to increase the number to 300 by the end of 2020.
