New Vehicle Safety System by ESMA to Combat Counterfeit Spare Parts in the UAE
Introduction
Cracking down on counterfeit automotive spare parts in the UAE, the Emirates Authority for Standardization and Metrology (ESMA) is set to implement a new vehicle safety system from October. This regulation will govern the sale and use of auto spare parts across the Emirates, initially focusing on new parts and preventing those without the ESMA quality mark from entering and being sold in the market.
ESMA's Strategy for Vehicle Safety
Abdullah Al Muaini, Director General of ESMA, stated: “Standards are being implemented in coordination with local authorities who will monitor the market. The regulation is part of ESMA’s strategy to regulate the transport sector and vehicles in a comprehensive and integrated manner to ensure safety of vehicles on the roads of the UAE.”
Implementation Timeline
Local traders across the country have been given one year to eliminate all non-complying parts from the market. The new regulations will cover several aspects of the auto spare parts industry, including:
- Manufacturing
- Packaging
- Transportation
- Storage
- Usage of parts
According to officials, a master database will be created containing information about all spare parts manufactured or imported into the country.
Future Plans for the Transport Sector
As part of ESMA’s plans to regulate the transport sector, the next stage will involve categorizing workshops across the UAE based on the services they offer, with each workshop receiving a rating. The objective is to create a central portal for motorists to easily search for the right garage for their vehicles and specific needs.
