Abu Dhabi speed signs

Speeding remains one of the leading causes of accidents on the roads not only in the UAE but all over the world. Road accidents leading to severe injuries to even death isn’t uncommon on the roads of UAE, and most of them are down to overspeeding, despite speed limits being clearly posted.

As of now, many of the roads and highways across the UAE are constantly monitored by radar to catch speeding motorists. Unlike many places around the globe though, these radars are calibrated with a certain amount of grace limit or buffer before the speed camera goes off. This means that if the speed limit sign for a certain stretch on a highway reads “100 km/h”, a motorist can go as high as 120 km/h before the speed cameras are triggered. At present, the fastest allowable speed limit in certain parts of Abu Dhabi is 140 km/h. These include the Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Road and Abu Dhabi - Al Ain Road, where maximum allowable speed is 140 km/h.

However, all of that is about to change in the emirate of Abu Dhabi quite soon. Come August 12, the Abu Dhabi Police will completely remove the speed buffer or grace limit. This means that on a road with a posted speed limit of “100 km/h”, motorists can no longer go past the ton mark. After August 12, if a motorist were to go past 100 km/h (and hit 101 km/h), the speed cameras will go off.

The existing grace limit will be removed from almost all of Abu Dhabi. That said, Abu Dhabi Police have confirmed that motorways such as the aforementioned Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Road and Abu Dhabi - Al Ain Road will remain unaffected. Motorists on these roads can still go up to the maximum allowable speed limit of 140 km/h.
