Audi's New Suspension System: Converting Kinetic Energy to Electrical Energy
Tags:
Introduction
It may sound strange, but it's true. One of the most innovative German car manufacturers, Audi, has been researching and developing a new suspension system by replacing traditional dampers with electromechanical ones.
How Does the New Suspension System Work?
The battery charging suspension system operates by converting kinetic energy into electrical energy. Based on current research, the system functions at:
- 3 watts on well-paved highways.
- 613 watts on rugged terrain.
Benefits of the New System
Simply put, the rougher the road, the more electricity is generated by the electromechanical dampers. Consequently, the engine's focus on charging the battery will be significantly reduced, which will save fuel and decrease emissions by 3 g/km of CO2.

Unlike traditional dampers that absorb energy and dissipate it as heat, the new system, as stated by Dr. J. Stefan Norsh, a member of Audi's Technical Management Board, "will harness this wasted energy using the new electromechanical dampers in a 48-volt electrical system."
Although the system is still in its early stages, the brand has announced that the eROT system is definitely expected in upcoming models.
Future Trends
Considering the direction Audi's technology is heading, this system is expected to be available in the upcoming Audi A8.
