Advancements in Autonomous Braking Systems by Car Brands

Autonomous Braking System

Introduction to Autonomous Cars

Lately, more than ever, we’ve been reading news about how car brands are working hard towards making autonomous cars a reality. Even though we will not own autonomous cars any time in the near future, we’re getting closer each day.

Current State of Autonomous Driving

Some aspects of autonomous driving have already become a reality in the automotive world, but one very important feature will be more prevalent in the coming years.

Standardization of Autonomous Braking Systems

A big group of automakers has decided to install autonomous braking systems in all of their vehicles. Their plan is to make these systems a standard feature on all new vehicles by September 1, 2022. That’s just around 6 years from now!

Participating Automakers

Pretty much every company selling light-duty vehicles is included in the list of automakers participating in this initiative. According to The Car Connection, the brands include:

  • Audi
  • BMW
  • Fiat – Chrysler
  • Ford
  • General Motors
  • Honda
  • Hyundai
  • Jaguar
  • Kia
  • Land Rover
  • Maserati
  • Mazda
  • Mercedes – Benz
  • Mitsubishi
  • Nissan
  • Porsche
  • Subaru
  • Tesla
  • Toyota
  • Volkswagen
  • Volvo

Impact on Road Safety

The primary goal behind this move is to cut down on the number of accidents each year. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), automated braking systems are expected to prevent more than 9,000 accidents and 4,000 injuries associated with those accidents annually. Additionally, it aims to reduce the cost of automotive insurance for owners of the new 2022 model year fitted with autonomous braking systems.

Conclusion

With the daily reports of accidents and the tragic photos we often see, we welcome this initiative which aims to enhance road safety. Such a significant move cannot be overlooked.

Drive safely, everyone!
