Changan CS75 Review: A Sporty Midsize 4x4

The Changan CS75 is the newest midsize 4x4 offered by Changan. It stands out as the sportiest option in Changan's lineup, closely followed by the CS35. Upon entering the showroom, I was greeted by the CS75, which, dressed in all black, made an immediate impression. Despite not being the most expensive or fastest 4x4 on the market, its good looks and cool demeanor were undeniable. After pressing the start/stop button, a smooth rumble filled the air.
Key Features
- Engine: Turbocharged 1.8L / 2.0L
- Transmission: 6-speed automatic / 6-speed manual

- Top Speed: 180 km/h

Exterior

Changan has excelled in styling the CS75, giving it a sporty and modern appearance. With aggressive bonnet grills, a small spoiler, and their iconic blue headlamps, it certainly isn't for the quiet type. The CS75 is well-proportioned with a great stance, showcasing impressive lines throughout its bodywork. My only critique is that the rims appear slightly small; an upgrade of an inch or two would enhance its look.
Interior and Safety

The cabin of the Changan CS75 offers a comfortable experience with five spacious seats and ample legroom. The boot space is generous enough to accommodate a large dog and supplies for a beach day. The seats are luxurious, enhanced by red stitching that adds a sporty touch. The center console features a 7-inch screen linked to a 6-speaker system, which performs well even at high volume levels. However, the absence of satellite navigation is a noted downside.
In terms of safety, the CS75 has a robust suite of features. It achieved an impressive score of 59 out of 62 in the China New Car Assessment Program (C-NCAP), indicating excellent safety credentials. Standard features include dual front airbags, front side airbags, side curtain airbags, stability assist, 6-way radar parking assist, a rear-facing camera, and blind spot assist. Moreover, cruise control and multifunction buttons on the steering wheel enhance convenience while driving.

Drive

Initially, I had modest expectations for the CS75's engine. Its small 1.8L engine suggested limited power, and I anticipated noticeable turbo lag. While it took a moment for the turbo to kick in around 3000-3500 rpm, when it did, the performance was surprisingly quick, revving smoothly to 5500 rpm. The car feels agile, and the suspension provides a comfortable ride with minimal body roll during cornering. Equipped with high-performance tires, it offers excellent grip for everyday driving. The steering is light and direct, making it easy to handle, fulfilling the expectations for a midsize 4x4.
Verdict

I genuinely like the CS75 and consider it a significant advancement in the midsize 4x4 market. Packed with technology, comfort, and an efficient engine, it offers great value for its price. I would rate the Changan CS75 a well-deserved 4 out of 5 stars.
