Continental's UltraContact NXT Tyre: A Leap Towards Sustainability
Introduction to the UltraContact NXT
Continental has revealed its brand new tyre series, UltraContact NXT, which is notable not for being the grippiest or most hi-tech tyre, but for its sustainable design. This tyre series is made of up to 65% renewable, recycled, and mass balance certified materials.
Innovative Materials Used
The German tyre manufacturer claims that it has become the first manufacturer to mass-produce a tyre with a substantial proportion of sustainable materials while achieving maximum EU tyre-label performance. The following renewable materials are included in the UltraContact NXT:
- Resins based on residual materials from the paper and wood industries (up to 32% of the tyre)
- Silicate derived from ash of rice husks
- High-performance polyester fibers made from recycled PET bottles using ContiRe.Tex technology
The recycled PET bottles used in this process would have otherwise been discarded in landfills or incinerated.
Commitment to Sustainability
The UltraContact NXT will feature a special logo on the sidewall indicating the use of “recycled materials.” This tyre series represents a significant step towards Continental's goal of achieving over 40% renewable and recycled content in its tyres by 2030.
Statements from Continental's Leadership
Ferdinand Hoyos, Head of Continental’s Business Area Replacement Tyres EMEA, stated: “At Continental, safety, performance, and sustainability go hand in hand. With the UltraContact NXT, we deliver on our ambitious sustainability goals. This development represents a significant leap forward and demonstrates our technological leadership as well as our strong commitment to both sustainability and safety.”
He further added, “With its impressive performance, the UltraContact NXT pushes sustainability to the NXT level.”
Availability
The UltraContact NXT replaces the previous UltraContact tyre in Continental’s portfolio. It will be available in 19 sizes at tyre dealers across Europe starting this July.
