Reduction of Speed Limits in Dubai Due to Pedestrian Accidents

Plans by Dubai Police and the Roads and Transport Authority

Dubai Police and the Roads and Transport Authority are planning to lower the maximum speed limits on roads in Dubai due to the increasing number of pedestrian accidents.

Statistics on Pedestrian Accidents

According to Major General Mohammed Saif Al Zafeen, Head of the Traffic Department at Dubai Police, there have been 27 fatalities from pedestrian accidents since the beginning of the year, marking an increase from 24 fatalities during the same period last year. In nearly every incident, the victims are Asian workers attempting to cross major roads such as Sheikh Zayed Road and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.

The Importance of Reducing Speed Limits

Major General Al Zafeen emphasized that lowering the maximum speed limit is crucial and will help reduce the frequency of accidents. While accidents will still occur, their impact will be significantly less if vehicles are traveling at lower speeds. Instead of fatalities, individuals may suffer, God forbid, less severe injuries.
