Introduction to the Expedition
In May 2024, an exploratory journey will commence from the United Kingdom, aiming to traverse the Nafud Desert in northern Saudi Arabia. The Nafud 2024 team plans to establish a new route through this remote and arid region, intending to be the first to validate the use of alternative energy as a viable option for exploration vehicles transporting the team, supplies, and equipment across these challenging off-road terrains.
Technology Used
Team leader Dr. Alan Crofts stated, "We are confident that we can practically use fully electric or hybrid vehicles for this expedition, and we have designed the route to incorporate suitable charging points."
- Partnership with Peabody Ltd. in the UK to develop mobile solar technology.
- Utilizing the latest flexible power transfer mats to enable battery charging for vehicles and equipment.
- Exploring the possibility of using biofuels to power a diesel vehicle.
Support from the Saudi Embassy
Interestingly, the team was recently invited to the Saudi Embassy in London to meet with His Royal Highness Prince Khalid. Dr. Alan mentioned, "His Royal Highness was very interested in hearing about the expedition and our plans to use vehicles with alternative fuel sources."
He pledged his personal support for the mission and promised to assist in ensuring the project's success, offering inspiring ideas and insightful advice. A formal reception for the team is scheduled in Riyadh in May 2024, prior to their journey into the Nafud region.
