New Fines for Smoking in Cars
People who smoke in the car with a child aged 12 years old and under will be fined Dh500. The fine will double if the violation is repeated. On Monday, the UAE Cabinet approved its bylaws to enforce the federal Anti-Tobacco Law, which was first passed in 2010.
Implementation Timeline
“I am very glad that the bylaws have been passed,” said Dr. Wedad Al Maidoor, head of the National Tobacco Control Committee at the health ministry. “Enforcement should start within a couple of months now … we will be ready to take action after the holy month of Ramadan,” she said, adding that the traffic police will begin training soon.
Impact on Smokers
Dr. Wedad also mentioned that those who previously violated this law will likely think twice before lighting up a cigarette.
Additional Violations and Fines
There will also be fines for:
- Violating the ban on advertising tobacco products.
- Importing tobacco without proper warnings.
- Placing cigarette displays near the cashier.
