2023 Haval H2 Review: Features, Performance, and Value

Introduction

The car you see above is the Haval H2, and it brings back fond memories as it was one of the first Chinese automobiles I drove that truly impressed me. Four years later, the H2 is back with a facelift and new features. Let us dive in and see if it can still outperform the more expensive Honda HR-V, Hyundai Creta, and Renault Duster.

Exterior

Haval H2 Exterior

Styling is subjective, but the Haval H2 looks much better than its Japanese, Korean, and French rivals. The designers have opted for a traditional approach, resulting in a look that is neither old nor boring.

The attention to detail is impressive. The LED headlights and hexagonal grille draw inspiration from its larger sibling, the H6, which has been reviewed earlier. You can read that review by clicking HERE.

Additional features include:

  • LED Daytime Running Lights
  • Bold bumper guard
  • 18-inch alloy wheels
  • Chrome window lining
  • Distinctive Haval badge on the C-pillar

The design reflects thoughtful consideration, and it is great to see that the H2 maintains its unique identity.

Interior

Haval H2 Interior

One of the standout aspects of the H2 is the quality of its interior materials. Despite being a budget-friendly vehicle priced around 60,000 Dirhams, it offers:

  • Leather seats
  • Leather steering wheel
  • Piano black trim
  • Extensive soft-touch materials throughout the cabin

This level of quality makes you question why you might need to spend nearly double for similar features from other manufacturers.

Haval H2 Cabin

Despite being a small crossover, the H2 offers ample space in the back due to its relatively straight roof—a feature that works in its favor compared to the coupe-styled Honda HR-V. However, it does fall short with a relatively small boot and the absence of rear A/C vents.

To keep you comfortable, safe, and entertained, the H2 is equipped with an impressive array of features, including:

  • Panoramic roof
  • 6-way power-adjustable driver’s seat
  • Push-button start
  • Tire pressure monitoring system
  • Cruise control
  • Reverse camera
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay

All of this is available for just 62,900 Dirhams!

Drive

Haval Steering Wheel H2

The Haval H2 is powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, delivering 148 horsepower and 210 Nm of torque. It is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission and features three drive modes: Eco, Normal, and Snow.

While you may experience noticeable turbo lag when accelerating from a stop, this is acceptable as the H2 is not designed for sporty driving. It’s also worth noting that the H2 is Front Wheel Drive, limiting its off-road capabilities compared to the 4WD version of the Duster.

In urban environments, the H2 offers a comfortable driving experience, thanks to features such as:

  • Light steering wheel
  • Electric parking brake
  • Auto hold function

The high seating position, combined with narrow A-pillars and large wing mirrors, provides excellent visibility and minimizes blind spots.

Verdict

Haval H2 Rear

Priced at 59,900 Dirhams, the refreshed Haval H2 not only looks better but is also built better and offers significantly more than its mainstream rivals. However, as a relatively new brand in the market, some may hesitate to invest in it. Fortunately, it comes with a 5-year/100,000 km warranty, a 3-year/50,000 km service contract, 3-year roadside assistance, and free registration in the UAE. When it comes to value for money, it's challenging to find a better option.
