Jaguar Autonomous Vehicle

Introduction

Self-driving cars are currently making waves in the automotive market, and most manufacturers are working towards adopting this technology. The emerging brand that has started to embrace this approach is Jaguar Land Rover, which has plans to produce over 100 research vehicles over the next four years.

Innovation Plans

Initial tests will focus on communication technologies (Vehicle-to-Vehicle / Vehicle-to-Infrastructure). Later this year, the first batch of vehicles will be driven along a 66-kilometer route covering highways and city streets in Coventry, Solihull, and surrounding areas.

Advanced Technology

Tony Harper, Head of Research at Jaguar Land Rover, stated: "Our automated technology can help improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and decrease the likelihood of accidents. We are also enhancing the driving experience for drivers, allowing them to choose the level of support and assistance they need. For instance, in traffic, drivers can opt for self-driving assistance during tedious or stressful parts of their journey."

Road Assistance Systems

The Road Assistance System is one of many technologies the brand is working on, utilizing a front camera to provide a 3D view of the road, enabling it to recognize obstacles and bumps. Consequently, the system applies a simple steering process to help the driver stay centered in their lane.

Collision Avoidance System

The Collision Avoidance System is designed to reduce collisions at low speeds, using a stereo camera to monitor the area in front of the vehicle. The system receives signals indicating a potential collision and automatically applies the brakes while warning the driver.

Additional Technologies

There are also a lateral warning system and an emergency vehicle warning system. The first system uses radio signals to send relevant information from vehicle to vehicle, while the second allows ambulances, police cars, and fire trucks to communicate with vehicles at high speeds.

Conclusion

It goes without saying that Jaguar Land Rover's research will undoubtedly make roads a safer place.
