Autonomous Taxis at Gitex Technology Week - RTA's Smart Initiative
Introduction
As part of the Roads and Transport Authority’s (RTA) smart initiative program, autonomous taxis with self-driving capabilities have made their way to the Gitex Technology Week in Dubai. This initiative contributes to the Smart Self-Driving Mobility Strategy, which aims to transform 25% of the emirate’s total journeys into autonomous means by 2030. The driverless taxis are designed in partnership with Dubai Silicon Oasis and DG World.
Features of the Autonomous Taxis
The autonomous taxis are currently being tested on dedicated routes around Dubai Silicon Oasis. These taxis are equipped with:
- Multiple cameras and sensors
- Capability to view traffic and road conditions
- Control over the vehicle
- Collision avoidance mechanisms
- Monitoring of traffic signals and lane demarcations
This innovative solution is an ideal step in easing “the last mile” for commuters, greatly benefiting those connecting with mass transport systems such as the Dubai Metro and Dubai Tram.
Specifications
A Mercedes-Benz dressed in beige livery, the autonomous taxi is being tested at speeds of up to 35 km/h and can accommodate up to four passengers, including a standby driver. The vehicle is installed with a dedicated button that allows the driver to take control when necessary, ensuring a seamless transition from autonomous mode to manual driving.
