Smart Pedestrian System in Dubai: Reducing Accidents and Managing Traffic
Tags:
Overview of the System
To reduce the number of pedestrian accidents, Dubai has implemented a Smart Pedestrian System. This system was installed by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) on Happiness Street, located near Dubai's financial district, which is one of the busiest pedestrian areas.
Official Statements
Mythah Mohammed bin Adi, the Executive Director of the Traffic and Roads Agency, stated: "This signal system is designed to immediately end the pedestrian crossing time when the system senses that no pedestrians are waiting on the sidewalk, thus allowing more time for vehicles to pass."
How the System Works
Mythah bin Adi explained how the system operates. The new traffic signals rely on an intelligent sensor system through a ground light system that monitors pedestrian movements both on the sidewalk and at the crosswalk. This system works in perfect harmony with vehicle movements by adjusting the traffic light timings based on the smart system's readings, thereby providing more time for vehicle passage.
Future Trials
The RTA is currently working on testing this new system to ensure its effectiveness and to explore its expansion to similar areas.
Expert Opinions
Nadim Shakir, a traffic management expert in Dubai, commented: "Sometimes the pedestrian signal duration is excessively long even when there are no pedestrians on the sidewalk. Furthermore, the current system prohibits pedestrian movement when the signal is red, even if the street is empty of vehicles. However, the new intelligent system will address this issue and facilitate smoother pedestrian flow."
