VW Golf GTI Edition 50 Sets New Nürburgring Record

Volkswagen has gone big to honor 50 years of the Golf GTI with the new Edition 50 model—and it isn’t just for show. Under the hood and on the track, this front-wheel–drive hot hatch has smashed records at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, claiming the title of fastest production Volkswagen ever with a blistering lap time of 7 minutes and 46.13 seconds.
A New Benchmark for FWD Hot Hatches
Previous Nürburgring legends like the Mk8 Golf R (“20 Years”) and the Mk7 GTI Clubsport S hovered around the 7:47 to 7:49 range. The Edition 50 not only beat those times, it did so on the slightly longer 20.8 km layout, which includes an extra 200 meters, making this lap even more impressive.
With tricky weather involved, driver Benny Leuchter noted that the setup and grip were “decisive” in handling the demands of the Green Hell.
Performance Package: The Secret Sauce
Key to the Edition 50’s success is the optional Performance package, which brings a performance-tuned chassis and lightweight 19-inch semi-slick Bridgestone Potenza Race tires. These tires, mounted on forged wheels, help reduce rotating mass, improving agility and overall grip.
While power figures haven’t been officially announced, VW hints that this will be the most powerful Golf GTI yet—likely targeting around 333 hp, effectively closing the gap to the Golf R.
A Toast to GTI Heritage
Celebrating 50 years of the GTI, Volkswagen has designed the Edition 50 to embody the hot hatch spirit with pure front-wheel-drive performance. The Nürburgring lap is a centerpiece of that celebration, proving that significant performance is still possible without electrification or all-wheel-drive systems.
What’s Next
VW plans to officially reveal the Edition 50 at the Nürburgring 24-hour race on June 20. The model is expected to reach showrooms in 2026 as a limited-edition flagship. Onboard footage of Leuchter’s lap is due to drop around the same time, offering fans a detailed view of this record-breaking moment
