2019 Ford Explorer: Features, Performance, and Specifications
Introduction to the Ford Explorer
The Ford Explorer was first launched in 1990, nearly 30 years ago, built on a body-on-frame chassis borrowed from the old-school Bronco SUV. It was only with the release of the modern fifth-generation model in late 2010 that Ford decided to update its platform to a monocoque build. This new Explorer remains in production today as a full-size crossover SUV.
Engine Options
Up until the introduction of the fifth-generation model, all Ford Explorers were equipped with either a V6 or V8 engine. The new Explorer marked the first time the model gained a four-cylinder engine, eliminating the availability of the eight-cylinder option. Globally, the new Ford Explorer offers five different engine choices, including:
- 3.7-liter Cyclone V6 (Police Interceptor Utility version)
- 3.5-liter V6
- 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6
- Additional EcoBoost engine options
Available Engines in the UAE
In the UAE, only two engine options are currently available:
- 3.5-liter V6:
- Power: 290 hp at 6,500 rpm
- Torque: 346 Nm at 4,000 rpm
- Transmission: 6-speed torque-converter automatic
- Drive: Front-wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD)
- Base Price: AED 152,000
- 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6:
- Power: 365 hp at 5,500 rpm
- Torque: 474 Nm at 3,500 rpm
- Performance: 0 to 100 km/h in 6.4 seconds; top speed 200 km/h
- Fuel Economy: Approximately 9.9 L/100 km
Performance and Fuel Efficiency
The base variant of the 2019 Ford Explorer, despite managing nearly 300 horsepower with just the front wheels, can still reach 100 km/h in 9 seconds, with a top speed of 173 km/h. However, the fuel efficiency is not its strong suit, averaging 10.0 L/100 km, which increases to 10.3 L/100 km for the all-wheel drive variant.
In contrast, the EcoBoost engine provides a robust performance without compromising fuel efficiency, making it an appealing option for buyers seeking power and economy.
