2013 Nissan Pathfinder Review: Performance, Interior, and Features

2013 Nissan Pathfinder

The 2013 Nissan Pathfinder presents itself as an entirely new vehicle. It differs significantly from its predecessor, evolving from a traditional SUV into a hybrid model described by Nissan as a blend of SUV and crossover, equipped for off-road capabilities but not explicitly designed for rugged terrains.

Each generation of the Pathfinder has offered distinct characteristics. From the original Pathfinder in 1986 to the latest iteration, the current model features a "unibody" construction, making it a family-oriented crossover SUV.

Driving Performance

The VQ 35 engine makes a return as a 3.5-liter unit, delivering 254 horsepower and 325 Nm of torque. This power output may not meet expectations, especially for a 2-ton 4WD Pathfinder. It comes paired with a new CVT that feels sluggish unless you accelerate forcefully, possibly a design choice by Nissan to enhance fuel efficiency.

With a 13% improvement in speed and a weight reduction of 30% (270 kg), the Pathfinder accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds in 2WD mode, reaching 6000 RPM at a speed of 120 km/h. We managed to achieve a speed of 170 km/h, and the vehicle maintained stability throughout.

The steering is firm and not overly light, but it lacks quick responsiveness. Drivers must concentrate to keep it on track at highway speeds, a characteristic often referred to as a bittersweet experience!

Interior Features

The interior is beautifully designed and bright, with attractive black accents complemented by beige leather, especially noticeable in the panoramic roof variant. The Pathfinder accommodates up to seven passengers with a cargo space of 173.8 cubic feet, which is commendable. The third row is notably improved compared to previous models.

Accessing the third row is straightforward, even with a child seat in the second row, and it features air conditioning vents and an entertainment system with a DVD player, making road trips enjoyable for families. The front seats are comfortable, and higher trims offer cooling and heating features.

Overall, the interior feels spacious and elegant, with a sleek exterior appearance. The technology is user-friendly, featuring an 8-inch touchscreen in the center console along with conventional buttons, setting it apart from competitors.

Summary

The Pathfinder delivers a mix of attributes but doesn't excel in any particular area. It feels unusual to accelerate without hearing engine changes or sounds, a result of the new CVT, though you may acclimate to this over time. Nissan's goal with these changes was to enhance family-friendliness. Prices range from $29,750 to $46,000, with a five-star crash safety rating, 10 airbags, and numerous other features.
