Comprehensive Review of the 2014 Dodge Durango
Are you considering purchasing a 7-seater SUV that is safe and offers a smooth driving experience on all types of roads for your family? The 2014 Dodge Durango stands out with features that set it apart from competitors like the Nissan Pathfinder, Honda Pilot, and Ford Explorer. You won't see the Dodge Durango frequently on the streets. We took it for a test drive on a trip from Dubai to Fujairah.
Elegance
This family SUV is beautifully designed and somewhat reminiscent of the Charger. The appearance of the LED headlights gives it an attractive look. The Citadel model features a stylish front grille, though it doesn't compare to the sporty grille of the R/T model. Additionally, the R/T sits 20mm lower. Both models come equipped with Bi-Xenon headlights and offer wheel sizes of either 18 or 20 inches.
Compared to its predecessor, the exterior has been updated to a more appealing design. The Durango claims to have the strongest towing capacity in its class, reminiscent of the Nissan Patrol. The V6 model comes with a single exhaust, while the V8 model features a dual 3.5mm exhaust.
Interior
Materials and Quality
It's hard to find faults in the interior. There’s minimal plastic used. The seating in the fully-loaded Citadel model is impressive, and the leather quality is commendable. Optional rear entertainment screens are available on the back of the front seats, unlike the drop-down screen found in the Honda Pilot, which can obstruct rear visibility. While the side visibility isn’t the best, it’s still acceptable.
Features and Technology
The entertainment system might not be the most intuitive for first-time users, but it becomes manageable once you get accustomed to it. For instance, the audio controls are located behind the steering wheel, and you won’t know how to adjust the sound until you explore it. We faced similar issues with the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee during our drive. Other than that, the technology is good for daily use. The sunroof opens and closes through separate controls. The gear shifter operates through a system reminiscent of Jaguar, with an additional gear option for V8 models. However, this doesn't classify the Durango as an off-road vehicle, though it performs well in valleys compared to some other cars.
Space
This is one of the most spacious SUVs, if not the most spacious. The Pathfinder still leads in rear legroom, but the Durango wins in cargo space, with good legroom in both the second and third rows. It’s certainly better than the Ford Explorer and Honda Pilot. Well done.
Safety Features
The Durango boasts superior safety mechanisms compared to its competitors. The list of features is long and impressive. The forward collision warning system gives the driver a jolt before an impending crash. The adaptive cruise control slows the vehicle when approaching another car, even to the point of stopping if you get too close. It also features front, rear, and side airbags.
Driving Performance
The Durango Citadel packs a punch with its 5.7L engine, delivering 360 horsepower. We accelerated to 6,000 rpm and the torque continued to rise. Its acceleration is not sluggish like other SUVs. The 8-speed transmission ensures smooth driving without any CVT noise. The handling is excellent, with stability and steering responsiveness also being top-notch. This vehicle is one of the few, aside from the Ford Explorer, that gives you a real driving feel. Additionally, road noise is kept to a minimum. Frankly, it was hard to find faults in the driving experience.
Conclusion
With a starting price of 129,000 AED and nearing 200,000 AED for higher trims, the only downside of the Dodge Durango is its price. Other than that, it’s a beautiful car, offers a better driving experience than its competitors, and ranks high on safety.
