2014 Infiniti QX80 Review: Luxury and Performance
Who is likely to buy the QX80? This large, towering SUV—previously known as the QX56—offers luxury, comfort, and a commanding presence. But will customers embrace it? Currently, demand for luxury SUVs is rising in the Middle East. Affluent families have numerous options, including the Lexus LX, Lincoln Navigator, and Cadillac Escalade. We tested this 7-seater giant to learn more.
Elegance
Compared to its competitors, the QX80 features more rugged styling, which some may find appealing. Its size commands attention, measuring 600 mm longer than the Lexus LX (check the comparison), making the 22-inch wheels look somewhat smaller.
- The high front bumper showcases a large grille, enhancing its presence.
- Equipped with automatic HID bi-Xenon headlights with adaptive control.
- Features LED taillights.
- The side wheels are attractive, complemented by chrome accents above the wheel arches.
Interior
Upon entering, the seats resemble those found in the Nissan Patrol, particularly in terms of material quality and stitching. There is ample wood trim on the center console, steering wheel, and even in the rear. Some higher-end models have less wood. The clock is a nice touch on the console, and the panoramic roof extends only to the front passengers. A full panoramic roof would enhance the experience for children in the back.
Rear Entertainment System
The QX80 comes with captain’s chairs and a rear console featuring a cooler with controls and headphones. Opting for the additional 13 or 15 Bose speakers will complete the luxurious interior experience.
Interior Space
We were surprised by the interior configuration. Our test vehicle featured a half cargo space, which means the second row accommodates only two passengers, lacking a middle seat. In the QX56 we previously tested, there was enough space for three in the second row. Thus, the 7-seater capacity has effectively become a 6-seater, and the third row is suitable only for children.
Safety and Comfort Features
I appreciated the sound insulation in the vehicle; it offers a remarkably quiet cabin, with minimal noise from the engine or road. On the downside, the air conditioning is somewhat loud, but it provides excellent cooling.
Safety Systems
The vehicle is equipped with lane departure warning (both auditory and visual), forward collision warning (auditory and visual), and adaptive cruise control.
Driving Performance
Engine and Power
The 5.6-liter V8 engine delivers 400 horsepower and 560 Nm of torque. Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes 7.5 seconds, which is quite impressive.
Driving Experience
The biggest challenge is parking this behemoth. Even in spacious areas, care is needed to open the doors and exit the vehicle. The QX80 looks fantastic inside a villa garage, but finding a parking spot at the Mall of the Emirates can pose a problem.
Best Driving Conditions
This SUV performs best on highways. Our test model included adaptive cruise control, allowing me to enjoy the ride comfortably during long trips with minimal footwork.
Transmission
The vehicle features 4WD with computer control, making it suitable for off-road driving. It comes with a 7-speed automatic transmission.
Steering and Control
I personally found the steering to be quite light for its size. A heavier steering feel would provide better confidence during turns.
Visibility
Anyone considering purchasing this vehicle should ensure it has front and rear sensors, as the front bumper can obstruct visibility. Our test model included both overhead and rear-view cameras, which significantly help, but driving without these features would be challenging.
Summary
The starting price of the vehicle is 279,000 AED, but it can exceed 300,000 AED (approximately $82,000) with additional safety features. On the positive side, I appreciated the comfort, wood accents, and its power on the highway. It is a very good family SUV.
