Mercedes-Benz has officially confirmed that a refreshed 2026 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is on its way. Recently, spy photographers captured the luxury sedan undergoing testing in Sweden, hinting at significant design and feature updates.
Exterior Design Tweaks and New Features
Updated Headlights and Grille
The spy shots reveal that the S-Class prototype—possibly a Maybach variant—features a redesigned front end. The headlights now incorporate LED three-pointed stars, a design element first introduced on the 2024 E-Class taillights.
Other changes include:
- A slightly reshaped grille extending lower on the bumper.
- Reworked bottom vents.
- A forward-facing camera cutout, possibly for an enhanced driver-assistance package.
Minimal Changes to the Rear
The rear design remains largely unchanged, but the taillights now also feature the LED three-pointed star motif. Additional chrome trim around the side windows and camouflage on the C-pillar suggest this test model could be a Maybach version.
Potential Powertrain Enhancements
Mercedes-Benz has hinted that the "major update" will go beyond visual changes, possibly extending to the powertrain lineup. The current S-Class offers:
- A 442-hp inline-six engine.
- A 496-hp V-8 engine.
- A plug-in hybrid variant.
- A Maybach version available with either a V-8 or a 621-hp V-12.
Mercedes has confirmed that the V-12 engine will continue production, though it will be limited to specific markets. As emissions regulations tighten, more electrical assistance could be integrated into the existing powertrains.
Advanced Autonomous Driving Features
The 2026 S-Class is expected to maintain its status as a technological leader. The 2024 model already offers Drive Pilot, a Level 3 autonomous-driving system. This allows drivers to take their hands off the wheel and eyes off the road for extended periods, and improvements could be on the horizon.
