The Toyota Camry has been around in one form or another for over three decades. From its teething years as an awkward, wedge-shaped car from Japan, the current eighth generation family sedan has come a long way. The new avatar of this uber-popular, sales blockbuster model was released in 2018 in the form of the eighth generation Camry, and this success story is bound to continue with the 2019MY of this Toyota as well.

Although the Toyota Camry is a popular choice amongst buyers looking for a midsize sedan, this is one of the toughest segments in the industry. This part of the market has buyers spoilt for choice with the likes of the Honda Accord, Chevrolet Malibu, and Nissan Altima.

Exterior

The all-new Toyota Camry has gone under the knife and been given a thorough makeover, something that it really needed if it had to stay relevant. The front fascia of the new Camry looks sharp, crisp, and modern – something its predecessor couldn’t boast about. There’s a large air dam with integrated fog lamp housing, slender headlamps with LED projector and DRL units, and a smooth-flowing hood to aid aerodynamics.

Unlike in the previous model, the wing mirrors are now placed on the door instead of the A-pillar. The latter is raked further aft and the roofline has a more distinct slope towards the rear, too. The rear of the new Camry also looks the part now, and features a sloping rear window, reworked taillight and bumper design, and a subtle boot-lid spoiler.

The 2019 Toyota Camry has a boot capacity of 427 liters, and measures 4.885 meters in length, 1.840 meters in width, 1.445 meters in height, and 2.824 meters in wheelbase.

Interior

Toyota Camry 2019 Interior

The 2019 Toyota Camry has by far the best cabin of any Camry that has ever come before it. Just like with the exterior, the interior design theme is refreshingly contemporary and upmarket. Toyota has also done away with most cheap bits and pieces in this cabin, and it’s now got an air of quality that earlier Camrys never had.

The new Camry also comes packed with features such as leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control, electrically-operated front seats, wireless phone charging pad, power rear sunshade, paddle shifters, electric sunroof, cruise control, 8-inch infotainment system with navigation, and smart keyless entry with push-button start. Safety kit includes 6 airbags, ABS with EBD and brake assist, stability control, tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS), ISOFIX points, hill start assist control (HAC), and front & rear parking sensors with a rearview camera.

Engine and performance

The 2019 Toyota Camry comes with three powertrain configurations – a naturally-aspirated 2.5-liter four cylinder which is rated at 6.7L/100 km, a 2.5-liter Hybrid that’s rated at 4.5L/100 km, and a naturally-aspirated 3.5-liter V6 that consumes 7.0L/100 km. The base Camry makes 178 HP with 231 Nm of torque, while the Hybrid produces a combined output of 208 HP with 221 Nm of torque.

The Camry’s V6 develops 298 HP with 356 Nm of pulling force, and sends power to the front wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission. In the case of the base four-cylinder and Hybrid, power is managed by a 6-speed gearbox and a CVT, respectively.

Verdict

Toyota Camry 2019 Side

The 2019 Toyota Camry range starts at AED 91,000 for the base four-popper, AED 133,500 for the Hybrid, and AED 124,500 for the full-option V6. Insurance starts at AED 2,048 for the base Camry, while the premium for the Hybrid starts just north of AED 3,000 and for the full-option Camry V6, the number starts at AED 2,801.
