For those visiting Abu Dhabi from other emirates, be it for a business meeting, to shop, or simply to catch up with family and friends, parking has never been an effortless process. In addition to dedicated parking spaces for residents and strictly controlled timings of those spaces, the hassle of having to register a vehicle before being able to pay by SMS has always been considered a sizeable inconvenience.

Improving the current system and making it far easier for all UAE-registered vehicle owners to pay for parking in the capital, the Department of Transport (DoT) has introduced an all-new SMS parking system that eliminates the need to register with Mawaqif first. The city code for Abu Dhabi-registered vehicles has also been changed from “RED” to “AUH” in light of the new system.

The new format for SMS parking in Abu Dhabi is: “City & Plate Code <SPACE> Plate Number <SPACE> Parking Type <SPACE> Duration”. Parking Type in the code refers to either “S” for Standard Parking (AED 2 for one-hour parking) or “P” for Premium Parking (AED 3 for one-hour parking).

An example of this new code for someone with a Dubai-registered vehicle would be “DXBJ 34342 S 2”.
