New SMS Parking System in Abu Dhabi
For those visiting Abu Dhabi from other emirates, whether for a business meeting, shopping, or catching up with family and friends, parking has often been a challenging experience. In addition to dedicated parking spaces for residents and strictly controlled timings of those spaces, the need to register a vehicle before being able to pay by SMS has been a considerable inconvenience.

Introduction of the New SMS Parking System
To enhance the parking experience for all UAE-registered vehicle owners in the capital, the Department of Transport (DoT) has launched a new SMS parking system. This updated system eliminates the requirement for prior registration with Mawaqif. Additionally, the city code for Abu Dhabi-registered vehicles has been updated from “RED” to “AUH” as part of this new system.
How the New SMS Parking System Works
The new format for SMS parking in Abu Dhabi is as follows: “City & Plate Code <SPACE> Plate Number <SPACE> Parking Type <SPACE> Duration”. The Parking Type in the code can refer to:
- S for Standard Parking (AED 2 for one-hour parking)
- P for Premium Parking (AED 3 for one-hour parking)
For example, a code for someone with a Dubai-registered vehicle would read: “DXBJ 34342 S 2”.
