Bugatti went all-out with the release of their new monstrous machine – the Chiron. Now, it is time for another heavyweight to strut its stuff. Koenigsegg, after spending a whole year perfecting the Regera, finally showcased the final product at the Geneva Motor Show.

A brief recap of the car: The Koenigsegg Regera is a hybrid hypercar that is powered by a twin-turbocharged 5.0 liter V8 engine coupled with three electric motors. Two motors power the rear wheels while the third motor is fused with the engine itself. The result of this configuration is a lot of power – 1500 BHP and 2000 Nm of torque. Compared to the Bugatti Chiron, there is 400 Nm additional torque and some 20 BHP more.

The innovation doesn’t end there. The Regera doesn’t have the traditional gearbox. Instead, it has something called Direct Drive which in laymen’s terms means this transmission is single-speed. In other words, the wheels spin as per the engine rpm so that there is smooth acceleration all the way to the maximum rpm of the engine. In total, the car weighs around 1.6 tons. For this system to work, the car needs to be at around 50 km/h so that engine and wheels are locked in one smooth rotation. Below 50 km/h, the electric motor kicks in to drive the car.

Around 3000 changes have been done since the Regera was previewed at the last Geneva Motor Show. The biggest change is introducing something called a clutch-slip mechanism which basically simulates the feel of changing gears even though they are not being changed. It is also the first ever car with an 800-volt battery pack. The car has adaptive suspension, heated power seats, Wi-Fi and Apple Carplay as well.

So what’s the final result of all these technical innovations? Well, the Regera can sprint from 0-100 km/h in 2.8 seconds, 0-200 in 6.6 seconds and 0-300 km/h in 10.9 seconds. The car maxes out at 400 km/h and as per Koenigsegg it will take 20 seconds to reach the top speed. The total production units of Regera will be limited to 80 making it the most number of units for any Koenigsegg model.
