McLaren and Nissan have joined forces for the upcoming season of the Formula E championship. The two carmakers announced “a multi-year technical collaboration” which will come into effect starting from the 2022/23 Formula season.

The Japanese carmaker will supply electric powertrains for McLaren Racing’s Formula E challenger. With the Gen3 homologation rules coming into play, McLaren announced back in May that it will be entering Formula E and many anticipated Nissan to make an entry into the sport as well seeing its advancement in electric car tech.

Nissan replaced its sister company Renault in the championship and entered Formula E back in the 2018/19 season in partnership with French e.dams team. Earlier this year, Nissan announced the full acquisition of the French team.

And it’s not just Formula E where Nissan is showcasing its electric expertise. In the automotive operations front, the Japanese carmaker aims to have 50% of its sales to be electric vehicles following the Ambition 2030 strategy and looks to have 23 electric models in its range.

McLaren is yet to roll out a fully electric car but unveiled the all-new Artura, a supercar that marks the beginning of a new era for McLaren supercars with its hybrid technology and brand new platform.

Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren Racing, said: “Nissan have proven their knowledge, craft and commitment over the last four seasons in Formula E, and heading into the Gen3 era, we have full confidence that the collaboration will bring both parties much success. This will be a true partnership that will drive both the team’s performance and the development of the Nissan Formula E powertrain technology.”

“Our new partnership with McLaren Racing will be a powerful one, as the association will inspire collaboration and knowledge sharing,” said Ashwani Gupta, Nissan's chief operating officer. “The pioneering spirit and drive to innovate are characteristics Nissan and McLaren Racing share, making them an ideal partner for us in Formula E and as we continue to electrify our vehicles.”
