MG RX5 breaks cover at Saudi International Motor Show

Revealed at the 2017 Saudi International Motor Show, the MG RX5 is a compact SUV that is likely to appeal to explorers across the Middle East. The newest entrant into the brand’s line-up and set to go on sale from January 2018, the RX5 is available in two trims and two engines, with prices starting at approximately SAR 53,000.

Speaking at its show reveal in Jeddah, Mr. Tom Lee, Managing Director of SAIC Motor Middle East, said: “The MG RX5 is the latest model to join MG’s exciting range vehicles and embodies the positive, new direction the brand is taking. As MG strengthens its presence across the Middle East, we believe that this new compact SUV possesses all the attributes to push the brand to the front of mind of the region’s car buyers.”

The futuristic exterior design, with 18-inch dual-tone alloys and sharp contours, is complemented by an equally impressive cabin that boasts chrome garnishes, soft-touch materials, and best-in-class space which is accentuated by a full-length panoramic roof. Practicality is further heightened with rear leg space and head space measuring in at 982mm and 987mm respectively, beating what is offered by most rivals in its segment.

On the tech side, a smartphone application allows drivers to control certain aspects of their MG RX5 such as remotely starting and stopping the air-conditioning system, tracking the vehicle, and even booking aftersales appointments with service centers located across the region. Keeping up with the times, the compact SUV offers a 10.4-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay on the 2.0T variant, and a smaller 8.0-inch screen with navigation on the 1.5T.

Churning out 169 horsepower and 250 Nm of torque while being mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission, the 1.5-liter turbocharged unit is no slouch. The mightier 2.0-liter engine ups the ante to 221 horsepower and 350 Nm, while pushing its grunt through a six-speed automatic transmission and accelerating to the 100 km/h mark in an impressive 8.2-seconds.
