The first-generation of the Audi A6 was introduced in 1994, and was made available as a sedan and station wagon (Avant). The A6 is the Ingolstadt-based automaker’s mid-size offering in the premium or luxury sedan market. In the UAE, the Audi A6 sedan is available in front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive forms, and can be had with three different engine options.
Currently in its fifth generation, the 2019 Audi A6 has grown larger, become lighter, and has turned out to be one of the most technologically-evolved cars in its segment. In my opinion, the outgoing A6 sedan wasn’t much of head-turner as far as exterior design was concerned. However, that has definitely changed with this new model. Along with a nicer styling, Audi has also updated the A6’s technology suite and refined its powertrain for improved performance. Still, the 2019 Audi A6 has to hold its ground against some of the best such as the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, BMW 5-Series, Jaguar XF, and Maserati Ghibli.
Exterior
The 2019 Audi A6 is a handsome-looking sedan, with balanced proportions and sharp design characteristics. The front end features a well-sculpted hood, a deep, chrome-covered ‘Singleframe’ grille, angular LED headlights, and a sporty bumper with a low-set air dam and faux air intake vents. Viewed from the side, the new A6 looks a lot like a shrunken down A8, which isn’t a bad thing. A couple of character lines and subtle contours break up the monotony, while elegant 19-inch rims, protruding wheel arches, and a swooping roofline all add extra flavor as well.
At the back, the A6 gets a stylish chrome strip that runs the whole width of the car, along with sophisticated LED taillights. The rear bumper also houses a couple of fake exhaust pipes (which I’m not a fan of) and a subtle trunk-lip spoiler. The 2019 Audi A6 sedan measures 4.933 meters in length, 1.874 meters in width, 1.455 meters in height, and boasts a wheelbase of 2.912 meters. The A6 has a sizeable boot which can hold up to 530 liters of luggage.
Interior
Compared to its rather drab predecessor, the revised interior of the 2019 Audi A6 showcases the perfect blend of class and modern sophistication. Again, Audi impresses with their use of premium materials and sensational build quality. The cabin of the new A6 has an air of chic and luxury about it, something that wasn’t very apparent before. Its larger dimensions also mean that space is great, and so is the level of comfort.
The Audi A6 is also equipped to the gills with modern tech features such as radar cruise control, adaptive LED headlights, adaptive dampers, panoramic sunroof, automatic dual-zone climate control, heated & cooled front seats, Virtual Cockpit instrument cluster, dual LCD center displays, premium audio system, all-around parking sensors with surround camera, acoustic windshield, ambient lighting, and Audi’s MMI display with navigation. The new A6 also gets the usual array of multiple airbags and electronic safety nannies.
Engine and performance
The 2019 Audi A6 can be had with one of three engines: a 1.8-liter turbo four-cylinder, a 2.8-liter six-cylinder, or a potent 2.0-liter turbo four-popper. The latter cranks out 252 hp and 370 Nm of torque, and is mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and Quattro AWD system. This 1.7-ton luxury sedan can scramble from 0-100 km/h in just over 6 seconds, and eventually clock an electronically-limited 250 km/h. Despite its AWD system and sprightly performance figures, this A6 can still return a respectable 6.7 L/100 km.
Verdict
The 2019 Audi A6 range costs from 197,900-225,900 dirhams for the base and top variants, respectively. Meanwhile, insurance premiums vary between AED 4,453 and AED 5,083.
