2019 Audi Q5 Review: A Luxurious SUV with Impressive Performance
Based on the (now) ubiquitous MLB platform that also underpins the Porsche Macan, the Audi Q5 is similar in size to the Tiguan, though much more posh, of course. The first-gen Q5 made its international debut back in 2008, and is currently in its second iteration since then. Compared to its predecessor, the 2019 Audi Q5 is now larger, more efficient, and far superior in terms of features and technology that’s available on-board. Its increased efficiency comes from better powertrain components and tuning, and is helped by the fact that the Q5 has now lost up to 90 kilograms in bulk.
The Audi Q5 has remained a popular choice for buyers in this segment, primarily because it offers good levels of comfort, technology, and performance. In the UAE, the all-new 2019 Audi Q5 competes with the likes of the Mercedes-Benz GLC, Infiniti QX70, Lexus RX, and Jaguar F-Pace.
Exterior
The sleek and aerodynamic outer skin of the 2019 Audi Q5 not only looks more elegant than before, but also adds some character to the design. The front fascia features:
- Large hexagonal grille
- Well-sculpted bumpers with multiple air intakes
- Striking LED headlamps
The swooping, curvy lines continue onto the side of the new Q5, which now gets large, trendy 20-inch alloy wheels, muscular front & rear haunches, and subtle silver roof rails.
At the back, the 2019 Q5 gets a stylish tailgate with a neatly integrated roof spoiler. The 3D-design of the LED taillamp cluster looks neat and modern, and the chunky rear bumper looks good, too. However, I’m not a fan of the fake exhaust tips which take away some of the sophistication, in my opinion. As for its dimensions, the 2019 Audi Q5 comes in at:
- Length: 4.663 meters
- Width: 1.893 meters
- Height: 1.659 meters
- Wheelbase: 2.819 meters
- Boot capacity: 550 liters (increased by 10 liters)
Interior
The interior of the 2019 Audi Q5 looks way more modern and appealing compared to the previous model. It’s a much nicer space to be in, making even more use of premium materials for that truly upscale look. The updated design includes:
- Flat-bottom steering wheel
- Fully-digital instrument cluster
- Driver-centric cockpit layout
The cabin also benefits from better sound insulation and offers more room than ever before. The features list of the 2019 Audi Q5 includes:
- Adaptive LED headlamps
- Radar cruise control
- Adaptive air suspension
- Panoramic glass roof
- Powered and ventilated front seats
- Electric tailgate
- Ambient lighting
- 12.3-inch driver’s display
- 8.3-inch MMI navigation/infotainment display
- B&O sound system
- Safety features including multiple airbags and electronic protection systems
Engine and Performance
Under the sleek hood of the 2019 Audi Q5 is a reworked version of the carmaker’s famed 2.0-liter TFSI motor. It now puts out a healthy 252 hp and 370 Nm of torque, and in the UAE, is available with Quattro all-wheel-drive and a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission as standard. The new Q5 TFSI can tackle the 0-100 km/h run in a brisk 6.3 seconds, before maxing out at 237 km/h. Also quite impressive is the fuel consumption, which is rated at 7.2 L/100 km, better than most of its rivals.
Verdict
The 2019 Audi Q5 range kicks off at AED 193,500 for the Basic variant, while the fully-equipped S-Line trim starts at AED 227,500. Of course, you can quickly go north of these figures once you start adding a few options, as it is with most Audis. Meanwhile, insurance premiums range between AED 4,354 to AED 5,119.
