Essential Bad Weather Driving Tips for Safety in the UAE
Due to the bad weather, there have been reports of fatalities and hundreds of accidents in the UAE. To help ensure your safety on the roads, RoadSafetyUAE.com has provided the following tips for driving in poor weather conditions:
Driving Tips for Bad Weather
- Visibility Down => Slow Down => Attention Up => Distance Up!
- Increase Distance: Extend your following distance from the usual 2 seconds in good weather to a minimum of 5 seconds. You must be able to stop within the distance of visibility!
- Turn on Your Lights: Use low beam headlights and front and rear fog lights (avoid using hazard lights).
- Consider Longer Braking Distances: Wet or slippery road surfaces can significantly increase stopping distances.
- Use Windscreen Wipers Properly: Ensure that your wipers are functioning well and maintain them regularly.
- Stay Focused: Concentrate on driving and avoid distractions from passengers, your phone, or other items.
- Listen to Traffic Updates: Tune into the radio for real-time traffic information.
- Be Considerate of Others: Look out for vulnerable road users such as motorcyclists, cyclists, and pedestrians.
- Enlist Passenger Help: Ask passengers to keep an eye out for oncoming cars and road obstacles.
- Stay in Your Lane: Avoid drifting into the middle of the road when visibility decreases.
- Use the Road Edge as a Guide: This can help prevent running into oncoming traffic or being blinded by headlights.
- If Visibility is Poor: Pull over to the side of the road and turn on your hazard lights to alert other drivers. Alternatively, pull into petrol stations or rest areas.
- Plan Your Trip: Prepare your journey in advance, leave earlier, or avoid driving if possible.
