New Taxi Regulations Allow Multiple Drop-Offs for Passengers

Overview of the New Rule
Taxi regulators have un-banned a rule that previously did not allow passengers to share a cab to more than one destination. Now, taxi drivers can make multiple drop-offs on the same route, but they must adhere to specific fare rules.
Fare Rules for Multiple Drop-Offs
According to the new regulations:
- Taxi drivers are not allowed to restart the meter at each stop.
- The last passenger to be dropped off is responsible for paying the entire fare.
Statement from Public Transport Agency
Dr. Yousif Al Ali, chief executive of the Public Transport Agency, stated, “Two friends can share a cab and can be dropped off at two points en route as long as the person getting off last pays for the entire journey.”
Concerns Addressed by RTA
Dr. Ali was responding to concerns raised by passengers and taxi drivers after the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) previously stated that sharing a cab with more than one drop-off was banned.
Penalties for Violating the Rule
The RTA has indicated that drivers who drop off passengers at more than one destination on the same fare could face:
- A fine of Dh2,000.
- Possible dismissal from their driving position.
