You probably haven’t heard of an electric car with a manual transmission, and that’s ok because truth be told, neither have I. If there is one manufacturer that is challenging the norm, it would have to be Chinese automaker BYD that is launching its e3 electric sedan with a clutch pedal and an H-pattern manual transmission.
Although it isn’t clear how BYD is implementing the transmission at this point, since it has been created for driving schools and not for official sale, reports claim that the car comes with various driving modes, namely Economy, Teaching, Throttle Lock, and Sports, all of which are designed to simulate different scenarios when teaching.
The e3 comes with a 38 kWh battery that allows it to travel up to 350 kilometers on a single charge. The manual model starts at 131,800 Yuan ($20,500 USD) while the automatic goes for 141,800 Yuan ($22,055 USD).
