Nissan Sunny

The Nissan Sunny has been one of the best-selling and promising models for the Japanese automaker in the Middle East region. The B-segment sedan is currently in its all-new fourth generation avatar, and it is built on the same platform as Nissan’s new Micra hatchback. On the other hand, the upcoming 2020 Chevrolet Onix is indeed a brand-new model in the American marque’s line-up.

In Chevrolet’s stable of cars in countries such as the UAE, the Onix will find itself placed just above the slightly smaller Aveo. The Onix is built upon GM’s Global Emerging Markets (GEM) platform, and throughout the model’s lifespan, has remained a top seller in regions across Latin America.

Chevrolet Onix

In terms of their visual appeal, the 2020 Nissan Sunny is rocking the brand’s latest iteration of the “V-Motion” front grille which definitely gives this sedan some presence. Then there are a set of sleek headlamps, a ‘floating’ roofline, and large but angular tail lamps with faux 3D effects. While this new model may not blow your mind, it sure looks far better than its predecessor.

As for the 2020 Chevrolet Onix, its styling is fairly decent as well -- though just like its Nissan rival, the overall design is in no way going to make you blush. However, having said that, the Onix certainly won’t offend anyone as it seems to have been sketched to attract all those who thought the Aveo’s design wasn’t modern enough.

Chevy has given the Onix almost eye-like headlamps, a deep-chin front grille with some chrome décor, thoroughly sculpted hood, stylish wing mirrors, and a sculpted rear end with wraparound tail lamps. As for its dimensions, the Chevrolet Onix measures 4.474 meters long, 1.730 meters wide and 1.471 meters tall; while its wheelbase is 2.600 meters and boot volume stands at 469 liters.

Meanwhile, the Nissan Sunny is 4.496 meters long, 1.740 meters wide and 1.455 meters tall. The Sunny’s wheelbase stretches 2.618 meters and its overall boot space measures 416 liters - over 50 liters less than the Chevy’s.

On the inside, both of these cars feel adequately spacious -- with the Nissan Sunny feeling just that little bit roomier in the back. The Sunny also seems to feel a touch better built - both in terms of its material quality and fit & finish. However, having said that, the interior design and styling of the all-new Chevrolet Onix looks way better than that of the outgoing Aveo.

Depending on their trim level, both these compact sedans can be had with features like a touchscreen infotainment system, leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel, shiny bits of interior trim, remote keyless entry and electrically-adjustable exterior mirrors to name a few. Both cars also feature flat-bottom steering wheels, which do uplift the perception of their respective interiors.

Chevrolet Onix Interior

Under the hood, the 2020 Chevrolet Onix is powered by a 1.0-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine -- churning out 123 hp along with a pretty decent 180 Nm of maximum torque. It comes mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission, while the motor is rated at 4.9 L/100 km in a combined cycle, which is quite a healthy figure. Top speed should be around the 180 km/h mark.

The naturally-aspirated engine in the 2020 Nissan Sunny, meanwhile, makes less power despite being larger - both in terms of its displacement and an extra cylinder. Its 1.6-liter four-popper mill generates 118 hp and 149 Nm of torque, all the while being engaged to Nissan’s Xtronic CVT. This unit is rated at 5.1 L/100 km.

Nissan Sunny Rear

Compared to its precursor, the 2020 Nissan Sunny sure is a big step up for the brand. The new model not only features a better design and equipment, but it’s also better built and remains just as spacious as ever. And by the looks of things, the 2020 Chevrolet Onix also seems to be a capable yet frugal sedan for the family. Its roomy boot, punchier powerplant, and decent interior design are sure to pique the interests of buyers in the segment.
