Dubai Traffic Police Proposes Speed Limit Reduction for Safer Roads

Overview of Speed Limit Reduction Proposal

Maj Gen Mohammed Al Zafeen, the chief of Dubai Traffic Police, has called for a 10 kph reduction on the speed limits across Dubai.

Rationale Behind the Proposal

Following Dubai Police figures indicating that almost two-thirds of the 1.2 million traffic offences recorded in the first seven months of 2013 were attributed to speeding, Gen Al Zafeen's proposal aims to enhance road safety.

Success of Previous Initiatives

Al Zafeen noted that any speed reduction plans are welcomed, referencing a similar initiative in Abu Dhabi where speeds were reduced by 20 kph on motorways, resulting in fewer speeding offences.

Impact on Traffic Accidents

"Lowering the buffer over speed limits will lead to fewer accidents," Gen Al Zafeen stated. He emphasized that ninety percent of traffic accidents occur due to excess speed.

Demographics of Offenders

Most of the speeding offenders identified were between the ages of 18 and 36.

Concluding Remarks

"Speeding costs society dearly in terms of human capital," Gen Al Zafeen concluded.
