2014 Range Rover Sport Review: Performance and Features

2014 Range Rover Sport

Land Rover, in association with Al Tayer Motors, held a full-day event for the media to drive the 2014 Range Rover Sport. The plan was to first take it for an off-road drive in the desert near Bab Al Shams, then enjoy lunch, and finally go for a quick spin on the tracks at Dubai Autodrome.

Exterior

The 2014 Range Rover Sport boasts a design that blends elements from the Range Rover Vogue and the Evoque, reflecting its position in the price range. The vehicle features:

  • Design cues inspired by Ford SUVs, particularly the head and taillights.
  • An improved aesthetic compared to its predecessor, with a smaller size.
  • Premium paint and finishes that make it a head-turner on the roads.

Interior

As with any premium SUV, the 2014 Range Rover Sport is equipped with numerous features, including:

  • A multitude of buttons for various functions.
  • A BMW-styled gear shift replacing the previous knob-style auto gear.
  • Comfortable seating, including seat coolers in the V8 model, essential for hot weather.
  • Somewhat limited legroom in the back, accommodating 3 adults but potentially cramped.
  • A larger in-dash screen with a user interface that requires adjustment.

With the A/C on and music pumping, we eagerly hit the road to explore the diverse driving modes of the vehicle.

On Road

The Range Rover Sport offered a driving experience reminiscent of a spaceship gliding along the road. The ride was generally comfortable, although we noticed:

  • A slight hint of wind noise inside the vehicle.
  • Powerful performance from both the V6 and V8 engines.

The 340 BHP V6 provided adequate power, though we felt a lack of torque compared to the V8 when accelerating. Conversely, the 510 BHP supercharged V8 delivered an exhilarating experience, with seamless power that made every drive thrilling.

On Sand

2014 Range Rover Sport Off-road

The 2014 Range Rover Sport excels in off-road conditions, making it easier than expected to navigate sandy terrains:

  • The V6 engine felt twitchy, requiring significant throttle to ascend dunes.
  • The V8 engine offered smooth control, effortlessly conquering the sandy landscape.

After our off-road adventure, we headed for lunch before returning to the Autodrome for track day.

On Track

We couldn't wait to unleash the 510 BHP V8 on the track. After the safety briefing, we suited up and entered dynamic mode. Despite initial skepticism about driving an SUV on a track, we found:

  • Exceptional brakes and acceleration, making it a thrilling experience.
  • Reduced curb weight and aluminum chassis enhancing agility.
  • Dynamic suspension providing excellent grip and stability with minimal body roll.

Our time on the track was limited to 10 minutes, but we managed to complete 6 laps, leaving us wanting more. Unfortunately, the session concluded at 5:30 PM.

In conclusion, we ended the day with smiles, recognizing that the new Range Rover Sport is pricier than its predecessor but undeniably more enjoyable to drive.
